Ferrari-Carano Vineyards & Winery Chardonnay 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Formerly called our “Alexander Valley Chardonnay”, this 2009 Ferrari-Carano Chardonnay boasts a Sonoma County appellation, as we’ve added superior lots of wine from our vineyards in Russian River Valley and Carneros, combined with Alexander Valley fruit. A full-bodied Chardonnay, this wine delights with aromas of apple, a hint of graham cracker, floral notes, and honey, perfectly balanced by flavors of lemon and pear on the entry and lingering, creamy marshmallow, toasted oak notes. This versatile, full-bodied Chardonnay pairs perfectly with seafood, poultry, white meats, and dishes with cream sauces. Try preparations that include citrus, butter, cream, cheese, bacon, roasted garlic, mustard, nutmeg, thyme, basil, or toasted nuts.

Ferrari-Carano vineyard practices are customized to match the particular characteristics of each vineyard to help the vines produce the best fruit possible, and to in turn, achieve the best wine possible. Directed by Don Carano and orchestrated under the supervision of Steve Domenichelli, Director of Vineyard Operations, these practices are extremely labor intensive. Steve and his team implement irrigation and nutrient regimes, trellis system and canopy management, rootstock and clone combinations, and pruning and cane selection for each vineyard site and each block within a vineyard. Because of Sonoma County's diverse geological makeup, even within one vineyard parcel there may be several different types of soil with different degrees of nutrients for vines and water-holding capacity. In addition, Steve and his team practice sustainable farming techniques, such as recycling organic matter for use as mulch in the vineyards, planting cover crops and other plant species to avoid soil erosion, add desirable nutrients back to the soil and to attract desirable insects, and integrating animals to naturally enhance biodiversity and nutrient recycling. This wine's toasty scents of lees fade into clean flavors of lemon and apple custard. It's a citrusy, buttery chardonnay for grilled fish.

Aromas of orange marmalade, honeyed lemon blossoms, and baked apples emerge from the fruity, medium to full-bodied 2007 Chardonnay. It possesses fresh acidity, a heady finish, and no obvious oak. Drink it over the next 1-3 years.

This winery's first big success was with Chardonnay and it is still their most consistent wine. Apple, pear and citrus fruit combine in a ripe and mildly oaky style that is very hard to resist. Serve this wine alongside swordfish steaks with lemon, oregano and capers.

Offers a lively beam of rich fruit supported by crisp acidity and layers of pear, apple, nutmeg and hazelnut flavors that are intense and concentrated, gaining richness on a long, firm finish. Drink now through 2009.

This gentle, balanced and very fine wine displays consummate artistry in winemaking. It has enough fruit, oak and creaminess to satisfy that Chard craving, without any one element sticking out, and manages to be big while retaining finesse and elegance.

Also screw-cap finished, the 2008 Chardonnay Sonoma exhibits abundant citrus blossom, poached pear, honeysuckle and tropical fruit characteristics in a medium to full-bodied, juicy, pure, heady style. This delicious Chardonnay should drink well for another 1-2 years.
