Ferrari-Carano vineyard practices are customized to match the particular characteristics of each vineyard to help the vines produce the best fruit possible, and to in turn, achieve the best wine possible. Directed by Don Carano and orchestrated under the supervision of Steve Domenichelli, Director of Vineyard Operations, these practices are extremely labor intensive. Steve and his team implement irrigation and nutrient regimes, trellis system and canopy management, rootstock and clone combinations, and pruning and cane selection for each vineyard site and each block within a vineyard. Because of Sonoma County's diverse geological makeup, even within one vineyard parcel there may be several different types of soil with different degrees of nutrients for vines and water-holding capacity. In addition, Steve and his team practice sustainable farming techniques, such as recycling organic matter for use as mulch in the vineyards, planting cover crops and other plant species to avoid soil erosion, add desirable nutrients back to the soil and to attract desirable insects, and integrating animals to naturally enhance biodiversity and nutrient recycling. Cherry acid bomb blends gracefully with anthocyanin-drenched dark fruit (plum, blueberry). Chewy tannins will carry you through a delightfully drawn out finish.

Grapes: Sangiovese, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon AROMAS & FLAVORS: SIENA has delicious aromas of raspberry jam, bacon, maple, leather and cardamom spice. Flavors of sweet plums and cherries are followed by graham cracker with more plum on the finish. SIENA has supple tannins and a balanced mouthfeel with lively elegance and depth. HOW ITS MADE: Select lots of grapes from our vineyards in Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River Valleys are harvested and destemmed, then hand sorted and fed directly into stainless steel tanks for three days of cold soaking. After cold soaking, yeast is added and pump overs commence, one to two times daily, for the duration of primary fermentation. When fermentation is complete, the wine is drained and pressed to barrels for malolactic fermentation and 14 months of cave aging before bottling. THE VINTAGE: A dry winter led to early bud break with unfavorable weather during bloom that disrupted the pollination process and resulted in a reduction of crop yields. Spring and summer were warm and dry, and the first grapes were harvested a week and a half earlier than 2014, making it one the earliest harvests ever. With reduced yields and plenty of warm sunshine to ripen the grapes, this year’s wines are concentrated in aromas and flavors, and display great color and balanced tannins. FOOD PAIRINGS: SIENA pairs perfectly with savory Italian food, like pasta with flavorful tomato sauces or pizza. SIENA is also delicious with dishes like chicken cacciatore, duck salad with raspberries or oranges, or simply prosciutto on crostini bread. COOPERAGE: 26% new French & Eastern European oak, 74% older oak Alcohol: 14.5% pH: 3.78 TA: .57

TASTING NOTES: Ferrari-Carano’s Italian heritage is reflected in this Sangiovese-based, easy-sipping blend. Select lots of grapes are chosen from our vineyards in Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River Valleys to create a beautifully-balanced, medium-bodied wine. Our 2014 SIENA has delicious aromas of pomegranate, cherry, plum, licorice and mocha. Flavors of strawberry jam on the entry are enhanced by cherry cola and smoky plums that add layers of richness to this elegant wine. SIENA has supple tannins that leave a balanced mouthfeel with lively elegance, depth and a lingering finish. VINTAGE NOTES: 2014 gave us another great crop of grapes, despite a second year of farming under drought conditions. The growing season began with an early bud break, after a dry winter. A warm and dry spring was followed by a consistently warm summer leading to elevated temperatures toward the end of August prompting an earlier harvest than the past year. These favorable conditions resulted in wines featuring good color and tannin structure along with concentrated flavors. WINEMAKING NOTES: SIENA is a red wine blend consisting primarily of Sangiovese. Grapes are harvested and destemmed, then hand sorted and fed directly into tanks for three days of cold soaking. Following the cold soak, yeast is added and pump overs commence, one to two times daily, for the duration of primary fermentation. Once fermentation is finished, the wine is drained and pressed to 21% new barrels for malolactic fermentation and 14 months of cave aging before bottling in March 2016. FOOD PAIRINGS: SIENA pairs perfectly with savory Italian food, pasta with flavorful tomato sauces or pizza. SIENA is also delicious with dishes such as chicken cacciatore, a duck salad with fruit, like raspberries and oranges, or simply prosciutto on crostini bread. BLEND: Sangiovese, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah COOPERAGE: 21% new French and Eastern European oak, 79% older oak Alcohol: 14.5% pH: 3.74 TA: .56

Ferrari-Carano has it made when it comes to sourcing good Sonoma County fruit. With estate vineyards in Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley, they're able to select outstanding Sangiovese, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon to blend for Siena. A reflection of their Italian heritage, Siena was one of the first premium Sangiovese blends made in California. The style emphasizes the bright cherry fruit that Sangiovese is known for. Blended with Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon the wine aged in new Hungarian and used French oak barrels for 12 months. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 90 points saying "Blended with Sangiovese, Syrah, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a big, exuberant wine that’s full bodied and fruity. It offers ripe flavors of black currants, licorice, mocha and black pepper, with hints of raisins. It’s luscious to drink now. Try with Szechuan beef or grilled pepper steak."
