Ferrari-Carano vineyard practices are customized to match the particular characteristics of each vineyard to help the vines produce the best fruit possible, and to in turn, achieve the best wine possible. Directed by Don Carano and orchestrated under the supervision of Steve Domenichelli, Director of Vineyard Operations, these practices are extremely labor intensive. Steve and his team implement irrigation and nutrient regimes, trellis system and canopy management, rootstock and clone combinations, and pruning and cane selection for each vineyard site and each block within a vineyard. Because of Sonoma County's diverse geological makeup, even within one vineyard parcel there may be several different types of soil with different degrees of nutrients for vines and water-holding capacity. In addition, Steve and his team practice sustainable farming techniques, such as recycling organic matter for use as mulch in the vineyards, planting cover crops and other plant species to avoid soil erosion, add desirable nutrients back to the soil and to attract desirable insects, and integrating animals to naturally enhance biodiversity and nutrient recycling. Rating: 90/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Creamy and toasty oak first smells with a hint of sweet butter for added richness make a fine start that is followed with scents of sweet apples, ripe pears and minerals. The wine is full at entry, then firms up a bit in progression and provides just the right mix between its evident viscosity and its balancing snap of vital acids. A couple of years of bottle age will see it grow and round out further.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

The Alexander Valley Chardonnay is a complex, fruit-driven Chardonnay that calls for richer foods such as lobster, mussels or salmon. Creamy risottos and pungent flavored cheeses are always a hit with our Alexander Valley Chardonnay, as well as hearty chicken, pork, turkey and veal dishes.

Another delicious blockbuster Chardonnay from Ferrari Carano. This has that classic California style: fruit, butter, and vanilla.
