Ferrari-Carano Merlot 2006
Select lots of grapes were chosen from our valley-floor and mountain-top vineyards in Sonoma County to create this beautifully balanced and full-bodied 2006 Ferrari-Carano Merlot. A multidimensional, velvety wine with a dark ruby color and complex nose of fresh black cherries, blackberry, roasted coffee bean and chocolate, this year’s Merlot is accented by intricately woven flavors of red currants and caramel with a touch of tobacco lingering on the silky, smooth finish. Food pairings: The fruit forward, easy drinking qualities of our 2006 Ferrari-Carano Merlot make it the perfect wine to pair with any red meat course, Italian entrée, and roasted or grilled fragrantly-spiced poultry dishes.
Cherry, melon, prune, dark fruit, sweet caramel, cream cheese, cotton candy, coffee, licorice and pepper on the nose. After 1 ½ hours, nose turns vegetable and closes off. Initial heat attacks the top back palate, followed by sour fruit (apple), black cherry and bell pepper in the middle. This wine starts tight, then opens briefly, then closes again. The cycle repeats itself. Smooth texture soon fades back to plainness, then comes back again to velvet at 2 hours. May need another year in the cellar to achieve balance and expose its qualities more evenly.
Chose this as my dinner wine two weeks ago when dining with an old friend who was traveling through the area. Having not seen him in over twenty years, I had to endure 2 hours of his graphic and excruciatingly detailed account of a 1998 boating accident in which he lost his left arm. The gruesome yarn put a pall over my experience with this wine. My recollection is that it had a medium body with a lengthy finish, unfortunately neither as lengthy as my friend's tale of woe nor the appendage that now hangs from his left shoulder.
over-bearing, buttery, milky, deep color
Shared a bottle with 4 friends at a restaurant; we all had different Italian meals (seafood, tomato-based pasta, cream-based, beef, saffron, etc) and this wine complemented the meals perfectly. Versatile, balanced. I'd buy it again.
