Ferrari Carano Fume Blanc Sonoma 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

"Our Home Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is truly a wine with a story. A first-time-ever, vineyard-designate bottling, this wine comes from the first vineyard Don and Rhonda purchased over 30 years ago, when they first discovered Sonoma County wine country. Located in Alexander Valley and affectionately called the Home Ranch, this two-tiered, steep, west-facing vineyard sits atop the elevated valley floor and enjoys full sunshine. An elegant wine with rich aromas and flavors of black currant, blackberry pie and cherry cola, a full mid-palate, broad and round tannins, with a spicy, racy finish." -Winery

Ferrari-Carano vineyard practices are customized to match the particular characteristics of each vineyard to help the vines produce the best fruit possible, and to in turn, achieve the best wine possible. Directed by Don Carano and orchestrated under the supervision of Steve Domenichelli, Director of Vineyard Operations, these practices are extremely labor intensive. Steve and his team implement irrigation and nutrient regimes, trellis system and canopy management, rootstock and clone combinations, and pruning and cane selection for each vineyard site and each block within a vineyard. Because of Sonoma County's diverse geological makeup, even within one vineyard parcel there may be several different types of soil with different degrees of nutrients for vines and water-holding capacity. In addition, Steve and his team practice sustainable farming techniques, such as recycling organic matter for use as mulch in the vineyards, planting cover crops and other plant species to avoid soil erosion, add desirable nutrients back to the soil and to attract desirable insects, and integrating animals to naturally enhance biodiversity and nutrient recycling. Lovely Sauvingon Blanc, great if you're getting a bit tired of really citrusy SB's this is more on the perfumed side.

Creamy citrus notes complement zesty flavors an aromas of tropical fruit such as kiwi, gooseberry, pineapples and mangos with a hint of grassiness. The Sonoma County Ferrari-Carano Fume Blanc is a blend of vineyard lots from various appellations of Sonoma County. Aged partially in stainless steel and older French oak gives this wine a crisp freshness and a subtle oak character that adds great complexity and depth.

The 2008 Ferrari-Carano Fume Blanc is 100% Sauvignon Blanc; a blend of vineyard lots from Sonoma County appellations — Dry Creek, Alexander and Russian River Valleys. Reduced yields but intensely flavored, well-balanced, ripe fruit was the happy result of a very challenging growing season. Individual lots are kept separate and each lot is gently crushed, de-stemmed and pressed, and then moved directly to stainless steel tanks or older French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine in barrels are sur lie aged and stirred every two weeks for four months. This Fume shows bright flavors and aromas of grapefruit, lemon and tangerine, mixed with pineapple and other tropical fruit notes. A hint of oak lingers on the finish adding to the complexity.

The best vintage of Ferrari-Carano's Fume Blanc in recent memory, this '04 is all about the fresh apple flavor of the fruit. There's a hint of wood spice, like nutmeg, and honeycomb savor. Through it, the fruit bristles with freshness and lasts. Great with boudin blanc, or anything you might serve with apple.

This gently structured wine has hints of vanilla and white asparagus to balance the soft white fruit flavors of nectarine and fig. For a picnic with fried chicken.
