Felsina "Fontalloro" Toscana IGT 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

This 470 hectare estate is located northeast of Siena, in the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, on the southern border of the Chianti Classico production area. Franco Bernabei has been consultant winemaker for many years at this family owned and run estate. Fontalloro is a selection of the best grapes from two four vineyards. It is an IGT wine. Grapes for Fontalloro are grown on the Fontalloro and Poggio al Sole vineyards situated inside the Chianti Classico zone, and the Casalino and Arcidossino vineyards in the Chianti Colli Senesi zone. The vines are trained according to the simple guyot system, with a maximum of 5-8 buds per vine. They are approximately 50 years old, situated at an altitude of 400m above sea level. Soils here are calcareous in the Chianti Classico area and predominantly loamy and sandy on the borders of the Crete Senesi. Vines are planted at a density of 5,400 per hectare. The grapes are hand picked over two periods and only the best bunches selected. The wine is rich, brilliant ruby red in colour. On the palate, it is powerful, ripe, rich and smoky, with great structure supporting the plummy fruit. Excellent balance of fruit and structure will ensure good ageing potential. Long and spicy on the finish.

A feeling that infuses the air, in harmony with the quality of the light, with the earth’s scent and the fragrance of the breezes, with the march of the seasons and night time silences. Before the eye that ranges unencumbered in all directions, a metaphysical landscape takes shape. A wondrous unfolding of hills, none blocking its neighbour, all offering spacious spectra of colour, yellow to indigo, in luminous waves rolling to a horizon majestically profiled with an ancient volcano, Monte Amiata, beloved of the Etruscans, that enigmatic race that first offered the vine and the olive to the early civilization of the Italic peninsula. This en-lightened land lived an extraordinary moment in Italy’s history, witnessing, if only for a few moments, the dream come true of an ideal city: Siena. Siena of the 13th and 14th centuries, where nature and art crowned the creative genius of those dwelling in such favoured spaces. Read less

"The 2005 Fontalloro is the product of a much less fortuitous vintage characterized by capricious weather. The floral red fruit verges on over ripeness and early hints of worn-in leather
