Faust 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

To capture the complexity of the grape and diversity of the Napa Valley, Faust seeks Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Agustin’s family vineyards in Rutherford and Napa’s soon-to-be named Tulocay viticultural area in the eastern foothills south of Atlas Peak, as well as small lots from diverse mountain and valley terroirs. Classic Napa Valley red and black fruit in the nose, also aromas of vanilla and toasted nuts. Dense and rich on the palate with abundant lip-smacking fruit and a supple, luxurious finish.

A decade after the first release from his Quintessa estate, Agustin Huneeus felt the thrill and excitement of a new endeavor beckon. A decade after the first release from his Quintessa estate, Agustin Huneeus felt the thrill and excitement of a new endeavor beckon. The underlying premise for all of the wines he has ever produced has been that great wines must be a reflection of a great vineyard. Faust is not. Instead, Faust is a tribute to Napa Valley’s noblest grape—full-bodied, decadently rich and unctuous Cabernet Sauvignon. Faust also honors the legend of Dr. Faust, a scholar and respected man of society who was tempted by the Devil to seek new renewed passion and youth in exchange for his soul. Faust is indeed the fruit of renewed passion for Agustin, though Mephistopheles has not yet appeared to claim his soul. To capture the complexity and diversity of the Napa Valley, Agustin takes bold and beautiful fruit from Quintessa that doesn’t fit his famous meritage blend’s elegant and finessed profile, and complements it with fruit from his vineyard in Napa’s up and coming Coombsville region and small lots of grapes that come form some of the valley’s best mountain and valley vineyards, from St. Helena to Yountville. The rich nose grabs you at the outset. Smoother and more mineral than many cabs. Blackberries are the dominant fruit, but the balance with the minerality was the main draw for me.

Starts very soft, with a smokey and smooth finish. As it sits in the glass you'll detect more cherries and tannin on the finish.

A beautiful, balanced Cabernet from the owners of Quintessa. Wonderful aromas of cherry and black fruits. The nose on this wine is just great. Paired with grilled beef tenderloin and it was perfect.

Had it in a 3L so it drank pretty well. What stood out to me was the acidity and minerality. It really drank with some grip. Blueberry flavors everywhere and came to what I refer to as that Darioush finish. We finished the bottle so I guess thats saying something! Not a game changer in my book but showed up well for my guests and I! MP-91

Not quite as full as l look for in a Cabernet Sauvignon, but nice fruit and round finish

A lovely medium bodied California Cab. Soft tannins and subtle spice notes along with dark berries and hints of stone fruit. It doesn't need food, but it would be delicious with a juicy steak or lamb chop.
