In the countryside east of Florence, where the Sieve flows into the Arno, the land of Rùfina stretches across to the hills below the first rocky spurs of the Apennines. It is a land that, even today, is dotted with old farmhouses and cypresses, a countryside bordered with vineyards and olive trees – just the way Tuscany has always been. This is the homeland of the straw-covered flask and it has long been famed for its wine. The area obtained DOC recognition in 1932 and DOCG in 1984. Today, Rùfina is one of the seven geographic specifications of Chianti. The "Chianti Rùfina" DOCG area covers the municipalities of Pelago, Pontassieve, Rùfina, Londa and Dicomano. Grape varieties: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano toscano and Malvasia del Chianti and other red grapes, each one according to fixed percentages, with a maximum yield per hectare permitted and a certain vintage wine aging for the “annata” and the “riserva” wines. The unique conditions of the Rùfina area yield a wine with excellent body and structure. These wines age particularly well and have been widely praised by the trade press in Italy and abroad.
