Fattoria di Felsina Toscana Fontalloro 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Johannisbeeren, Kirschen, Vanille, voller Körper, reife, feine Tannine, langer fruchtiger Abgang. In seiner Jugend eher verschlossen. Braucht viel Zeit um seine Qualitäten und die Vielschichtigkeit seines Charakters voll auszudrücken.

Fattoria di Felsina:
Fèlsina. A name reaching back to Etruscan times. Fèlsina. A name reaching back to Etruscan times. A feeling that infuses the air, in harmony with the quality of the light, with the earth’s scent and the fragrance of the breezes, with the march of the seasons and night time silences. Before the eye that ranges unencumbered in all directions, a metaphysical landscape takes shape. A wondrous unfolding of hills, none blocking its neighbour, all offering spacious spectra of colour, yellow to indigo, in luminous waves rolling to a horizon majestically profiled with an ancient volcano, Monte Amiata, beloved of the Etruscans, that enigmatic race that first offered the vine and the olive to the early civilization of the Italic peninsula. This en-lightened land lived an extraordinary moment in Italy’s history, witnessing, if only for a few moments, the dream come true of an ideal city: Siena. Siena of the 13th and 14th centuries, where nature and art crowned the creative genius of those dwelling in such favoured spaces. Read less

The 2008 Fontalloro is the yin to the Rancia's yang. It is also characteristically beautiful, open and expressive at this stage. Layers of sweet red fruit, flowers and spices blossom effortlessly from the 2008 Fontalloro. The intensely saline finish that is present in the Rancia is found in Fontalloro as well. I am usually not the biggest fan of Fontalloro, but there is no denying the superb pedigree and sheer class of the 2008. This is a wonderfully, sophisticated, polished wine from Felsina. In 2008 the slightly drier microclimate at Fontalloro vis-a-vis Rancia is the main reason this wine is such a huge success in 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2026. Though bright and elegant, sporting cherry and raspberry flavors, this red is lean and dominated by tea and tobacco notes on the firm finish. Sangiovese. 2,750 cases made. -BS

A rich brilliant ruby red. Good spice on the nose with generous notes of tobacco and wet earth and of dry earth as well. The palate is supported by a hefty charge of medium-smooth tannins to ensure the required lengthy ageing. Superb weight and structure with a classic finish. Significant cellarability in great vintages.
