Fèlsina. A name reaching back to Etruscan times. A feeling that infuses the air, in harmony with the quality of the light, with the earth’s scent and the fragrance of the breezes, with the march of the seasons and night time silences. Before the eye that ranges unencumbered in all directions, a metaphysical landscape takes shape. A wondrous unfolding of hills, none blocking its neighbour, all offering spacious spectra of colour, yellow to indigo, in luminous waves rolling to a horizon majestically profiled with an ancient volcano, Monte Amiata, beloved of the Etruscans, that enigmatic race that first offered the vine and the olive to the early civilization of the Italic peninsula. This en-lightened land lived an extraordinary moment in Italy’s history, witnessing, if only for a few moments, the dream come true of an ideal city: Siena. Siena of the 13th and 14th centuries, where nature and art crowned the creative genius of those dwelling in such favoured spaces. Read less

Full of roasted strawberry notes on the nose with a soft, sweet floral note and hints of tar, light earth, and fading spices adding complexity. In the mouth this is polished and plush with modest intensity of cranberry and roasted strawberry fruit. The tannins are nice and crisp and poke out a bit on the long finish which shows incipient notes of tobacco and bitter greens. A touch soft and diffuse but still showing well. 90pts

This opens immediately with a very fine nose, complex and balanced with a bit of wood but integrated with lots of liquory fruit, smokey and a touch gamey, excellent aromatics. In the mouth this is round and lush with good acid and very fine tannic structure, a classic medium weight mouthfeel, like a kite in the mouth with tannin and acid spars supporting a billowing. airy fruit. Dark berry notes dominate the midpalate but there are interesting forest floor and porcini notes that add interest and a bit of toasted hazelnut on the backend which is joined by bright bitter cherry fruit and a touch of espresso foam. Finish is elegant and layered with solid length to the wild berry fruit notes. With dinner the nose turns earthier with dark spicy fruit and gentle spice notes, the acid becomes a touch more prominent giving the wine a juicy feel with a candied apple fruitiness, touch of green apple in fact and a lovely insinuation of dried funghi leads to the long, slightly grippy finish. A very complete wine that is still youthful but show excellent concentraton without being clumsy, very fine equilibrium bodes well for further positive development, compelling and engaging. 2008-2018

Smoky, loamy, spice and leather. Open and broad, liquory/medicinal black cherry fruit. A bit raw, unripe tannins, good acid. Fine balance if a bit heavy on the edges, though clear with strawberry and a touch of prune. Nice snappy finish, candied dry fruit and mint on the finale. Clear. 89 pts

Extremely mellow, cherry nose. Nice, chalky, but still bright and smoothly acidic cherry and red currant flavors. Hints of spice and a long, warm finish.

Light with high acid. Vegetal and grainy with lots of cherries.

Nose is a bit hot. Nice dried cherry aroma. Cherry immediately attacks your mouth, but this is a smooth wine. Chalky tannin and a very short finish.

Nice, extremely mellow wine, thats still rich in intensity and fruit, but exhibits great balance. Fruits of bing cherries leading to an acidic finish, thats followed by mellow tannins and then plums. Integrated tannins throughout and a lasting finish with some diesel notes.

Red berries, definitely smell the age on this one, some leather. Very smooth taste with some red berries. Probably my favorite of the night

The 1997 Fontalloro may be the finest made from this single vineyard (and I have tasted them back through the early eighties).
