Food Pairings for Fattoria di Felsina Fontalloro Toscano Rosso
At Italian dinner in Tokyo, September 2009. Color thick, dense garnet. Hints of spice, tobacco, flowers on the nose, Extremely well balanced, with very good length, acidity and well-knit tannins. Minerality was surprisingly elegant, as were its dark fruit characteristics. Almost a feminine nature. I hadn't remembered having the wine before, but when it entered my glass, and I smelled and tasted it, I flashed back to a time in Florence at the beginning of this decade when I had an earlier vintage.
Fruity and powdery/grainy. Nice complexity and a little on the tangy side.
Dusty sweet red fruits, saw dust and barnyard on the nose. On the palate i found strawberry fruit and fig with minerals and herbs. It was at one soft yet drying with fine tannins. A good bottle that should be even better with time.
Clear ruby red in color. Earthy mineral and pepper on the nose. Tart cherry, red berries and spice. Nice Chianti.
No tasting notes but we all enjoyed this wine at our last tasting
Dirty mineral nose. Very light tannins, medium acid and body. Red cherry, minerals, medium concentration, interesting! Not just a food quaffer like typical Chianti. $20
Excellent Chianti. Nice structure, not too heavy. Good fruit, but somewhat tangy at the end. A very nice bottle of wine for less than $20.

Felsina's single-vineyard 2003 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia presents more overt toasted oak notes along with darker, riper fruit in a structured expression of Chianti Classico. With some time in the glass complex notes of smoke, tobacco, licorice, mint and black cherries emerge, completing this gorgeous and intensely satisfying wine. In two separate tastings I found the Rancia more complex than the Fontalloro, most likely owing to the poorer soils of the Rancia vineyard. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.
Medium-deep ruby. Spectacular nose offers intense strawberry and red cherry fruit with balsamic accents, and a penetrating violet character that contributes to the impression of breathtaking purity. Lovely bright red fruits complemented by a salty mineral edge, with nuances of game and wet earth on the finish - the latter a sure-fire sign of a hot vintage with Rancia, as these flavors normally take longer to emerge in this wine than they do in the Fontalloro. I might have scored this even higher had the finish been a little longer.
Very well made, from one of the Chianti's best vineyards. Loads of plum and roses on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, with well-integrated yet chewy tannins and a caressing, silky texture. Another winner from Felsina. Best after 2000.
Subtle aromas of ripe fruit and perfume follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a slightly dry finish. Disappointing. Drink now. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
The 2006 Chianti Classico is a beautiful, plump wine loaded with vibrant, sweet, ripe fruit. It offers lovely depth in an engaging style that is sure to find many admirers. This is a terrific effort from one of Italys most consistently outstanding producers. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.
Very pretty aromas of crushed raspberries and fresh flowers. Full-bodied, yet refined and caressing. All in finesse and complexity. One of the best in Chianti Classico. Best after 2002.
Deep, attractive ruby red colour. Elegantly fruity nose, with marked scents of wild red berries foregrounding nuances of mixed spices. The palate, too, shows excellent fruit supported by judicious tannins. Lengthy finish.
Johannisbeeren, Kirschen, Vanille, voller Körper, reife, feine Tannine, langer, fruchtiger Abgang. In seiner Jugend eher verschlossen. Braucht viel Zeit um seine Qualitäten und die Vielschichtigkeit seines Charakters voll auszudrücken.
