Fattoria di Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

94 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia more than holds its own in this complete vertical. It shows elements of both a cold year in its mid-weight structure and a warmer vintage in its radiant fruit, a combination that represents an attractive stylistic middle ground. I very much like the sense of energy and intensity here. Bright acidity and youthful tannins frame the supple fruit. It will be interesting to see whether the 2009 develops along the lines of the cooler vintage Rancias, or whether the juiciness of the fruit will ultimately prevail in the wine's balance. Either way, the 2009 is yet another terrific Rancia from Felsina. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. (Jun 2012)

A feeling that infuses the air, in harmony with the quality of the light, with the earth’s scent and the fragrance of the breezes, with the march of the seasons and night time silences. Before the eye that ranges unencumbered in all directions, a metaphysical landscape takes shape. A wondrous unfolding of hills, none blocking its neighbour, all offering spacious spectra of colour, yellow to indigo, in luminous waves rolling to a horizon majestically profiled with an ancient volcano, Monte Amiata, beloved of the Etruscans, that enigmatic race that first offered the vine and the olive to the early civilization of the Italic peninsula. This en-lightened land lived an extraordinary moment in Italy’s history, witnessing, if only for a few moments, the dream come true of an ideal city: Siena. Siena of the 13th and 14th centuries, where nature and art crowned the creative genius of those dwelling in such favoured spaces. Read less

A well of cherry and licorice notes draws you in, with meat, cherry, currant and spice flavors backed by beefy tannins. This is on the lean, taut side, but vibrant, pure and full of personality.
