User Reviews for Fattoria di Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia
Add your reviewThe ’08 Rancia was unexpectedly open at this young age. The nose showed red berries, cocoa powder and deep floral notes. On the palate, it was open and juicy with red berry fruits. The finish showed more of structure I was expecting. This is a fine example of Rancia that (in this year’s case) is more open in its youth than the Fontalloro. (Fattoria di Felsina was awarded the “Snail” symbol by Slow Wine, representing a winery that they “particularly like for the way it interprets Slow Food values.”)

Rather than get in the way of the cherry and blackberry flavors, the deft use of oak merely adds spice and interest. The firm backbone and earth and tobacco notes are rooted in place. The austere finish reflects tobacco and tea accents. Needs time. B... Wine Spectator. Has a lovely balance, with pretty plum, dried cherry and berry character, medium to full body and a long, caressing finish. A beauty. Always outstanding. For the U.S. market only. Best after 2003.
Plenty of blackberry and cherry character with hints of mineral. Medium- to full-bodied, with fresh fruit and a clean finish. Slightly closed. Best after 2004.
Felsina's 2005 Chianti Classico Riserva reveals gorgeous sweet fruit, flowers and delicately laced toasted oak with lovely inner sweetness and perfume. There is outstanding precision and weight to go along with the wine's fresh, vibrant personality. The 2005 Riserva is a commendable effort in this challenging vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020.
The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva emerges with hints of smoke, underbrush, licorice, leather and wild cherries. The wine gains volume and depth in the glass as its sheer pedigree emerges over time. There is plenty of muscle to back up the delicate aromatics in a striking balance of elegance and power, all in an essentially classic, mid-weight style. The round, deeply satisfying finish makes it hard to put the glass down. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2027.
Winemaker's Notes:
The 2008 is not a huge Rancia like the 2006, or a more obvious, immediate wine like the 2007. Layers of fruit hide beneath a powerful wall of tannin. The wine remains intensely mineral and equally primary, with little in the way of aromatic development.... the wine clearly needs a number of years before it begins showing its true pedigree. Those in search of fine, cellar worthy Chianti Classico will adore the 2008 Rancia. Clean, saline notes frame the exquisite finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2023. - Wine Advocate
