Potent aromas of ripe, sweet plum and red berries, tar, chocolate and vanilla. Solid and elegant on the palate with a velvety texture and lovely harmony of plummy fruit, chocolate and oak tones. Substantial finish features round, melting tannins.
Medium-deep ruby. Pleasantly soft aromas of ripe red cherry, vanilla and smoked meat. Fat and supple on entry, then more vibrant in the middle as lively acids kick in and lighten up the pretty raspberry, plum and underbrush flavors. The finish is smooth and of moderate length.
The 2004 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano takes things to another level with its densely packed, richer personality. It offers superb weight on the palate in a riper style than the Rosso, with excellent length and finessed tannins. This blend of 90% Prugnolo Gentile and 10% Canaiolo Nero and Mammolo was aged for two years in a combination of Slavonian oak casks and French oak barrels. It will offer highly pleasurable drinking to at least age 12. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016.
The 2000 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, cask and barrel aged, is a dark fresh ruby. The plums, wild cherry, and prunes on the warm and alcoholic nose are accompanied by aromas of smoke and tar, and the well concentrated flavors, silky, elegant, and long. This suggests that the wine, already pleasurable, will age until 2010. 350,000 bottles were made, an important number.
The 2001 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a thirty thousand case cuvee, is very impressive for a wine made in these numbers with ripe and ample red fruit aromas, penetrating and expansive, firm and solid flavors, significant length, and plenty of follow through on the finish. Drink: 2005-2014.
