Fattoria del Cerro Rosso di Montepulciano 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

90 points James Suckling: This is ripe and powerful with lots of tannins and hints of coffee and vanilla. Full body and long finish. A little jammy but stylish. Needs a year to soften. Try in 2014. (12/20/13)

Fattoria del Cerro, with its 93 hectares of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano vineyards recorded in the register, is the largest private estate producing Vino Nobile. The spaciousness and the different exposition of the vineyards allow selecting the best grapes to make high quality wines. Prugnolo Gentile, the grape behind Nobile di Montepulciano, is the clone of Sangiovese, typical of this area, and which, over the course of the centuries, has adapted itself to local growing conditions. Vino Nobile is produced in three different versions: the regular wine Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G., the Riserva Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva D.O.C.G., and the single vineyard selection Vino Nobile di Montepulciano "Antica Chiusina" D.O.C.G.. Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) 90%, Mammolo 10% Deep and complex on the nose with an initial burst of leather and mineral followed by hints of thyme, toasted oak and nuts and dark berry fruit all topped with a hint of mint. Fairly rich and powerful with blast of plummy fruit early on the palate followed by dark cherry fruit, subtle mineral notes a lovely notes of tobacco and blackberries on the backend. Round, rich and in need of a bit of further cellaring this is a powerful wine that shows uncommon complexity, depth and finesse at this price or double this price. The only knock is that the finish is a bit short with some drying tannins but they may very well soften perfectly with time. For now serve this with a nice steak or stew. 88pts

Fairly lightly colored, which does not surprise me for an Italian Sangio. Something of a musky nose. Wow really light for a red wine. On introduction to the tongue/palate I'm inclined to describe it as "watery." Some berry/cherry flavor pops up as it travels to the back of the tongue, and, then, there is detectable tannin puckeriness. A fairly easy drinking wine, and, for the price, a very easy drinking wine. US$10.98 at Wine Club in Santa Ana

Dry tannic attack, with a good fruity nose. Rather plain, some fruits in th emouth, however a bit tart and with a rather bitter finish. Sorry, not impressed.
