The 2006 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is an explosive wine packed with dark fruit. This medium to full-bodied red offers notable intensity and a long, harmonious finish. Sweet notes of tobacco and minerals linger on the polished finish. It is a terrific effort in this vintage, and an equally compelling value. The Vino Nobile is 90% Prugnolo Gentile, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Mammolo that spent 18 months in a combination of cask (70%) and smaller French oak barrels (30%). Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016. Milk, berry and plum aromas lead to a medium body, with good fruit and a delicate citrus finish. Drink now. 30,000 cases made. -JS

Good blackberry and chocolate character, with hints of vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a medium finish. Very well done. Best after 2005.

The 2005 Vino Nobile di Montpulciano is an accessible, straightforward wine with dark red fruit blossoms on the palate with an attractive inner juiciness. Made in a somewhat restrained style, it is best enjoyed over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011. This is a gorgeous set of wines from Fattoria del Cerro and oenologist Lorenzo Landi.

Medium-deep ruby. Pleasantly soft aromas of ripe red cherry, vanilla and smoked meat. Fat and supple on entry, then more vibrant in the middle as lively acids kick in and lighten up the pretty raspberry, plum and underbrush flavors. The finish is smooth and of moderate length.
