Fattoria del Cerro Chianti 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2006 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is an explosive wine packed with dark fruit. This medium to full-bodied red offers notable intensity and a long, harmonious finish. Sweet notes of tobacco and minerals linger on the polished finish. It is a terrific effort in this vintage, and an equally compelling value. The Vino Nobile is 90% Prugnolo Gentile, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Mammolo that spent 18 months in a combination of cask (70%) and smaller French oak barrels (30%). Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016...90" WA 09/09

Fattoria del Cerro, with its 93 hectares of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano vineyards recorded in the register, is the largest private estate producing Vino Nobile. The spaciousness and the different exposition of the vineyards allow selecting the best grapes to make high quality wines. Prugnolo Gentile, the grape behind Nobile di Montepulciano, is the clone of Sangiovese, typical of this area, and which, over the course of the centuries, has adapted itself to local growing conditions. Vino Nobile is produced in three different versions: the regular wine Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G., the Riserva Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva D.O.C.G., and the single vineyard selection Vino Nobile di Montepulciano "Antica Chiusina" D.O.C.G.. The 2000 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, cask and barrel aged, is a dark fresh ruby. The plums, wild cherry, and prunes on the warm and alcoholic nose are accompanied by aromas of smoke and tar, and the well concentrated flavors, silky, elegant, and long. This suggests that the wine, already pleasurable, will age until 2010. 350,000 bottles were made, an important number.

Gorgeous aromas of chocolate, berry and mocha on the nose. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a refreshing acidity. Give it bottle time. Best after 2003.

Potent aromas of ripe, sweet plum and red berries, tar, chocolate and vanilla. Solid and elegant on the palate with a velvety texture and lovely harmony of plummy fruit, chocolate and oak tones. Substantial finish features round, melting tannins.

The 2001 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a thirty thousand case cuvee, is very impressive for a wine made in these numbers with ripe and ample red fruit aromas, penetrating and expansive, firm and solid flavors, significant length, and plenty of follow through on the finish. Drink: 2005-2014.

The 2007 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano reveals tons of staying power in its juicy dark fruit, spices and minerals. This shows lovely inner perfume and ripeness in a fairly round style for Vino Nobile, all while retaining quite a bit of vibrancy. Sweet, mentholated notes add a dash of complexity on the finish. The Vino Nobile is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo Nero that spent two years in a combination of 70% Slavonian oak casks and 30% smaller French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2017.
