Fattoria Dei Barbi Colombini Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Fiore 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

The Colombini family has had properties in Montalcino since 1352 and has owned the Fattoria dei Barbi since 1790. The estate is a hedonist's dream with 404 hectares devoted not only to the production of top quality wine, but also salami, prosciutto, pecorino cheese, olive oil and honey. The estate and vines of Fattoria dei Barbi are among the the oldest, most noble and most reputed of Montalcino. The estate has been rejuvenated both in the cellar and vineyards and quality improves at a steady pace. The Brunello di Montalcino is powerfully structured. This is an austere, warm, amply flavoured wine with a deep ruby to brick-red colour and a richly complex, dry, full and soft palate. A muscular, full-bodied wine with great richness, Brunello di Montalcino is the King of Tuscan wines. It should accompany strongly flavoured meats and game.

This has a big, roasted black raspberry torte of a nose with all the light toast, baked spices and apricot glaze notes. With air this gains a touch of tarriness to the fruit and a balsamic top note. Big and powerful in the mouth, the tannins have a slight unripe edge to them that contributes a touch of underlying bitterness to the dark, coffee toned fruit. The fruit is deep and expressive and the wine retains solid acidity so this has promise though it is a big, bruiser style of Brunello. Needs a few years to integrate better 20011-2020 88pts

Made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, this Brunello has a really interesting mix of aroma vs. palate. At first the nose reveals roasted meats, toast and ripe concentrated stewed prunes. Then you taste the intense ripe cherries, plums and spices and then a bit later chocolate, more spices and black pepper. 14% alcohol.

Vlagschip brunello van barbi. Kan nog wel 30 jaar liggen.

Nose: Dark berries, such as black plum Taste: Fruit: black plum Taste: Tannins: Medium, not yet softened. Somewhat bitter. Overwhelmes the fruit. Decanting: Needs 2 hours. Finish: Long, mainly lingering tannins Aging: Do not open before 2011

Ein schöner kräftiger und komplexer Körper, fruchtiger Geschmack.
