Farella-Park Road Block Syrah Estate Bottled 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

deep purple color, rich plum and blueberry aromas and flavors overlaid by smoky, toasty oak. Slightly meaty and coarse in the mid-palate but the richness and big fruit ties it all together. The finish is very smooth and rich, partly due to elevated alcohol but no perceptible "heat" for a wine of this fortitude. Holds up well open for several days.

Could I be? Morphing from a Cab girl to a Syrah girl? I've asked myself a number of times, and this is one more reason that I may be making that cross over. The bouquet here is incredible. It's figs and pepper and even a hint of earth - like working in the garden after a light rain. The mouth feel is lush with balanced tannins and hint of vanilla. Leather comes across in the mid-palate and the finish speaks of mocha or even dried cocoa with a dash of cinnamon. Like a Mexican coffee! Wow.

I first got into wine when I tried some of the great stuff being produced in the Walla Walla valley. For anyone who doesn't know, Walla Walla Valley vintners are making some world class syrahs, so for someone who hasn't had the opportunity to try much outside of the valley this was the best surprise of the day. This syrah was very dark in color with huge notes of pepper and other classic syrah characteristics. Nice structure and so complex it could take me a week to think about this wine. BUY THIS.

...and I'm not talking about Dave Lombardo from Slayer's "other" band! I'm talking about how this wine GRIPS your tongue tight! But let's back up a second: the smell gives me some sensations of vanilla, a little chalky, a smidgen of plum sweetness as well. The taste takes off from there and adds to those sensations a little more plum and even some saltiness.
