nice nose of toast, light butter on the palatte it is very refreshing with a crisp finish
The reputation of California Chardonnays is one of heavy oak and butter overwhelming the fruit in the glass and while that may have been the case in the past, there are many wineries moving away from that style towards a more traditional style of wine. This particular wine was very well balanced with flavors lime, Meyer lemon, hazelnut and nutmeg and a very nice acidity to keep things fresh. It is a bit pricey at $40 retail but still a very good wine.
This is our personal favorite "house" Chardonnay. Consistently good and a treat to drink and share with others.
Powerful and famous Chardonnay from one of the older vineyards in California. Rich in oak with a buttery, creamy mouthful. Butter bleeds into the palate with hints of caramel and underlying fruit. Good but not worth the money in my opinion.
Nice toasty oak with a crisp flavor. Not as rich and buttery as the 2004/2005s I tasted, but a good quality chardonnay from a consistent producer. -Tasted a Hostile Grape 8/5/09 - Tasted at Lee's Wine Experience 11/7/09 I'd go to 4.25 stars this time.
Has a more smoky/oaky taste than most chards I've tasted. Smooth and delicate. A mature and refined wine already, but will mature! Wow.
Strong nose of vanilla and spice. Soft yet strong vanilla notes along with green apples and pears (not much malolactic fermentation). Good spiciness from the oak. A long crisp finish. Beautiful. Tasted as part of winery tour - not to be missed.
External Reviews for Far Niente Chardonnay Napa Valley Estate Bottled
Sourced from Coomsville, a cooler sub-appellation of Napa Valley, Far Niente Chardonnay has bright crisp citrus fruit character, and moderate French Oak influence.
The best Far Niente Chardonnay in some time. This delivers very complex aromas and flavors, with subtle tiers of ripe pear, honeydew melon, fig and apricot, as well as hints of toasty, vanilla-scented oak. Drink now through 2018. 27,900 cases made. -... Wine Spectator. A Chardonnay wine from California in USA. 2009 Far Niente Chardonnay 750ml
Far Niente Chardonnay has earned its reputation as one of the great white wines worthy of aging. The grapes are hand picked from the various estate vineyards and then hand sorted at the winery. Shortly after starting fermentation in stainless tanks, the must is racked into a high percentage of new French oak barrels. To assure proper development, the barrels are topped biweekly, allowing our wine to age gracefully on its yeast lees for eight months. The winemaker evaluates each barrel for quality and style before it may be included in the blend. This wine is a classic Far Niente Chard, with a full, firm structure, lush roundness, intense fruit and spicy oak. Enjoy it now or let it continue to age and develop in your cellar for 5 or more years.
Pure, clean, rich and layered green apple, pear, spice and nutmeg give this a tight focus. Full-bodied, intense yet supple, with a long, fruity finish. Drink now through 2012.
The winemaker notes that this wine has undergone no malolactic fermentation, which is rare in an expensive Chard because you don't get that big, fat, rich buttery softness. What you do get is pure pear and tropical fruit that is elaborately oaked in really good barrels. It is fancy and detailed but not blowsy.
Intense and vibrant, a touch coarse at this stage, but the purity and focus of spicy pear and nectarine flavors is appealing and those flavors are long and persistent on the finish. Drink now through 2007.
This wine opens with delicate aromas of citrus blossom, honeydew melon, pear, flint and toasted almonds. The entry is silky with pear and citrus flavors. Refreshing acidity leads to a juicy finish, layered with toasted oak. 100% barrel fermented; no malolactic. Barrel aged 9 months sur lie in French oak (68% new, 32% once-used). Not yet reviewed; 2010 vintage rated 91 points by California Grapevine.
