Aromas of melon, guava and ripe fig are layered with toasty spices that resemble hazelnut and clove. Upon entry, the wine is round and creamy and the palate brings forth a tropical minerality that balances a spicy, toasty finish. Far Niente Chardonnay has never gone through malolactic fermentation, as we prefer bright fruit and crisp acidity in our Chardonnay. Sur lie aging and regular stirring of the lees provide creamy layers of complexity.

Sourced from Coomsville, a cooler sub-appellation of Napa Valley, Far Niente Chardonnay has bright crisp citrus fruit character, and moderate French Oak influence.

Far Niente Chardonnay has earned its reputation as one of the great white wines worthy of aging. The grapes are hand picked from the various estate vineyards and then hand sorted at the winery. Shortly after starting fermentation in stainless tanks, the must is racked into a high percentage of new French oak barrels. To assure proper development, the barrels are topped biweekly, allowing our wine to age gracefully on its yeast lees for eight months. The winemaker evaluates each barrel for quality and style before it may be included in the blend. This wine is a classic Far Niente Chard, with a full, firm structure, lush roundness, intense fruit and spicy oak. Enjoy it now or let it continue to age and develop in your cellar for 5 or more years.

Aromas of Meyer lemon, toasted nuts and fig are supported by the underlying sweetness of honeysuckle. The entry is honeyed with ripe citrus, light melon and well-integrated nuttiness and a touch of mineral. A rich, full midpalate with balanced acidity draws out into a long finish. - Winery ** SOLD OUT **

Rating: 85/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. With a curious mix of both green and ripe fruit and a touch of chemical sharpness in the nose, this small-hearted working is limited in richness and reach, and its grasp on real Chardonnay fruit is tentative at best. It may find more focus with time in the bottle, but its substantial price makes it a gamble we are not at all likely to take.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.
