Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Cave Collection 2009
The 2009 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromas of boysenberry and blackberry pie, tobacco leaf, cassis and toasted oak. The entry is chewy, with black cherry fruit supported by warm, spiced oak. Thick and structured, the wine lingers on the palate with flavors of boysenberry, cherry and spice. Winemaker's notes
Tasted at Allied Beverage Group Spring Wine Gala 4/22/10 at Trump Plaza.
Three and a half glasses
Silky fresh with aromatic black cherry with a hint of cedar. Has a long decadent finish. This is not a big boisterous cab but it is delicate with fruit yet finishes strong from the oaky structure.
very seductive! chocolate, anise and velvety smooth tannins.
aromas of very dark fruit, black currant, dark chocolate. a definate earthiness, but the sweetness of vanillan and the perfume are multilayered, full. Silkiness is the best way to describe the finish.... wonderful with grilled red meat. A delight!
Four and a half glasses
loads of varying berry fruit combined with dark cocoa, lovely tannic structure balanced with the proper amount of acidity, all around yummy!

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon comes across as a touch rough around the edges. There is good depth to the dark varietal fruit, but today the wine's angular contours make it hard for the wine to be as expressive as it could, or frankly should be, conside... Far Niente owns an estate vineyard in Oakville; the very heart of Napa Valley. Oakville is where many of Napa’s best wines are from, and of course this one of them. Their 100 acre Martin Stelling Vineyard with its gravelly soils produces densely flavored Cabernet. The 2007 was a huge success in Napa Valley and this vintage is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petie Verdot age 16 months in 70% new French oak. Robert Parker scored it 93 points saying "The finest Cabernet Sauvignon I have ever tasted from Far Niente may be the 2007 Estate. Its dense purple color is accompanied by fragrant aromatics of creme de cassis, spice box, underbrush, and forest floor. Voluptuously-textured and full-bodied with superb purity and depth as well as a layered, complete finish, this terrific wine should be drinkable before the 2006, but age just as long 20-25+ years." This is one of the most tannic Cabs Far Niente has produced in quite a while. It's really not drinkable now, despite very complex flavors of blackberries, cherries, licorice, tobacco and plums, along with plenty of smoky new oak. Made with a few drops of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, which add perfume and flowers, it's a wine that won't come into its own for quite a while. Hold until 2013, at least, and it should provide interesting drinking for years after, in a proper cellar. S.H. Tightly wound, firm and tannic, this well-structured red has a core of herb- and bell pepper-laced cedar, currant and tobacco flavors that are taut and concentrated. Ends with chewy tannins. Best from 2011 through 2017. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 12,790 cases made. -JL
Far Niente, one of the earliest stone wineries, derives its name from the Italian phrase "Dolce Far Niente" (how sweet it is to do nothing), was founded in 1885 by John Benson and flourished until the advent of prohibition. Abandoned for over 60 years, the old stone shell of a winery was purchased in 1979 by Gil Nickel. He started the long process of restoring it as a part of his quest to create a great Napa Valley wine estate. As the vines and the debris were cleared, he found the original name, Far Niente, carved in stone on the front of the building where it remains to this day. Far Niente's quest to produce outstanding wines of distinctive character has led them to a philosophy that requires vineyard ownership. Today, they own 200 acres (3 different vineyard sites) of what many regard as some of the finest vineyard land in the Napa Valley. Their Stelling Vineyard of 100 acres is located against the west hills of Oakville, contiguous to...
