Add your reviewAs far a I am concerned, Russian River Valley has some of the very best Zinfandel in the world! This Fanucchi Vineyards 2005 OLD VINE Zinfandel is one of the best ever! While Fanucchi has a focus on capturing the fresh Zinfandel fruit it is as ripe as it can be without crossing the line to beyond so. It is wonderful right now showing Raspberries, Black berries, Ripe Cherry, Blueberry, with silky-chocolate-smooth tannins, a hint of pepper & floral nose. This Zinfandel is a classically balanced red wine which will pair well with a wide range of dishes. It's wonderful in 2011 & should be so for years to come!
This wine was Blind Tasted against: Ravenswood Old Hill, a hand full of Mazzocco Winery's best, a hand full of Wilson Winery's best and a few others in the highly competitive $50* & up category of the 2010 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. The Fanucchi Vineyards took the only Unanimous Gold awarded as Double Gold! (*In our case when you purchase 4 bottles we discount it to $39 including overnight delivery anywhere in California!) This has everything a world class red wine should have! The Fanucchi Vineyards 20005 Old Vine Zinfandel is rich with fruit 100% at the zenith of perfect ripeness: cherry, blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, a hint of pepper, and silky dark chocolate tannins that linger all together with a floral nose. One never knows exactly when a wine is at it's peak but this week I can say it is absolutely stellar now and I wouldn't hesitate to cellar some for a few years if you can!
WOW! A Zinfandel made the way great wine is suppose to be made! While the Fanucchi Vineyards 2005 Old Vine Zinfandel by the number on the bottle has an alcohol level of 15.6 (which is usually a sign of a very unbalanced wine) it still delivers a tremendous dose of crisp distinct Zinfandel fruit Ripe Cherry, Black Berry, Blue Berry, Raspberry... with big but soft smooth tannins. It got a Double Gold but It should have been the best red wine of the whole show at the 2011 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
Truly this is a rare red wine! Not only is this 2005 Zinfandel big but it has all endless layers of clear fruit complexity that just keep going which is so rare in even a 2 year old zinfandel!
We've long enjoyed both Fanucchi Vineyards wines. The 2005 Old Vine Zinfandel is one of the most outstanding red wines I've ever had! Yes this is a Zinfandel but Fanucchi crafts his wine in the European tradition avoiding going for the extreme! We have to go the extra step of having a third party ship it to us from California but it is worth the trouble and when we order a full read more case the shipping becomes very reasonable and we know that the wine is not spending lots of time stored under questionable conditions and on a bright warm store shelf! Also I imagine if you are reading this you are more likely just into red wine but I highly recommend you try the Fanucchi Vineyards Trousseau Gris See: http://www.snooth.com/wine/fanucchi-vineyards-russian-river-valley-trousseau-gris/ You can now get a deep discount when you order their "New taster's four pack". To get a full case and save on shipping we've ordered three at a time.
I totally love this Red Wine! It's a classic red wine that was crafted in the old school so that it develops while aging slowly! It shows all the brilliant fresh fruit this variety SHOULD and has big silky Tannins but everything is in balance and at 6 years old it seems fresher & younger than so many new releases of this variety! This wine is the Fanucchi Vineyards 2005 Old Vine Zinfandel! Great Wines Fanucchi!

I've been looking forward to doing a vertical tasting of Peter Fanucchi's current vintages of Old Vine Zin (the 2004-2002-2001) and finally got the chance to do so yesterday. The experience DID NOT disappoint. We started with this, the 2004. The nose is exactly like a skinned cherry covered in sea salt... intriguing, and a nice break from the candied sweetness I've grown accustomed to in Zinfandel's in this reasonable price point. There are great flavors of ripe cherries, with a slight vegetable component, like asparagus and cherry pie. The finish is long and glorious, smooth fruit flavors lingering on my tongue for several minutes after the bottle is gone. A great effort that will age gloriously, as the 2002 and 2001 will attest.
The 2004 is an absolutely superb all around wine! Originally, nearly 10 years ago, I discovered Fanucchi Vineyards Trousseau Gris but then I tried the Zinfandel at a dinner in the Carnelian Room (on top of the B of A building in San Francisco) between the panoramic bird's eye view, the food, & most of all the Fanucchi Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel I thought I was in Heaven!
This is a really impressive Old Vines Zin. Very Old World in it's approach, it's not overly fruity as I find some Zins to be. The nose speaks of figs with a hint of anise and a salty sweet hint of cashews. On your palate it's well rounded with firm tannins and a bit of pepper. The finish is nice and long, and I think this could be appreciated for several years to come.
This Zinfandel well crafted & while it opens up & shows well now it will age well for years to come. Just wine points gave it 99 Points for good reason! This one has some punch! Make no mistake it’s a concentrated full bodied Zinfandel but is still balanced in the European tradition and is loaded with ripe black berry fruit, smooth tannins, black pepper & a complexity that just keeps on going!
I've been a Fanucchi fan for a few years now & his wines are consistently in my personal top 10. Right now I really like both the Fanucchi 2002 & the 2004 Old Vine Zinfandel but I think the 2002 is much closer to it's prime while I think the 2004 may eventually be far superior I will be saving some 2004 & having more the 2002 in the coming months.
The smell action sensation is that of a leather-bound book with LOTS of fruit (and a pinch of saltiness)... good layers in there for sure. The taste takes those sensations and adds a little chocolate covered cherry to the mix with equal amounts sweetness and spice, yum!
