What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Winemakers Notes

This Zinfandel well crafted & while it opens up & shows well now it will age well for years to come. Just wine points gave it 99 Points for good reason! This one has some punch! Make no mistake it’s a concentrated full bodied Zinfandel but is still balanced in the European tradition and is loaded with ripe black berry fruit, smooth tannins, black pepper & a complexity that just keeps on going!

Tasted the vertical they had at ZAP '09 last week. This '04 was outstanding! Big bold & peppery judging from the others it will be great for a long time to come.

This is a Big Bold Zinfandel! While it has all the deep concentration you'd expect from the best of Russian River's Wood Road it has plenty of distinct fruit! Give it air & it is great & even better on day 2 & 3 ---- I couldn't leave it for annother day but you get the Idea -- this one will age if you get enough bottles!

This is a big bold Zinfandel grown & produced by Peter Fanucchi. The stuff he grows on Wood Road & Sonoma's Russian River Valley. is always a rare treat! His style always captures the full fruit & eligance of the best Zinfandel in the state & also has the punch to satisfy those cravings with out being over done! This is ballanced & can easily age for 10 more years -- if you want too!

"Hand tended" by Peter Fanucchi for over 3 decades on Wood Road!
This is truly Old Vine Zinfandel as the vines were over 70 years old when he started! This is a big bold Zin with the full compliment of the fruit & old World charm! It's great when you open it & continues to get better!!!! I'll have to get a case so I'll have some left to age!

I've been looking forward to doing a vertical tasting of Peter Fanucchi's current vintages of Old Vine Zin (the 2004-2002-2001) and finally got the chance to do so yesterday. The experience DID NOT disappoint. We started with this, the 2004. The nose is exactly like a skinned cherry covered in sea salt... intriguing, and a nice break from the candied sweetness I've grown accustomed to in Zinfandel's in this reasonable price point. There are great flavors of ripe cherries, with a slight vegetable component, like asparagus and cherry pie. The finish is long and glorious, read more...
