Very "peppery" aromas in the glass--also some kind of musty thing going on, there. Fairly easy on the palate--medium weight--more mineral or earthy flavors than fruit, although there is some sort of "sweetness" sensation on the side of my tongue. Very satisfying finish. This is not a great wine, but it will be easy to drink tonight. US$14.99 at Costco

Winemaker's Notes:

Rhone-South Rhone, France $17.95 (566844) (a 50/50 blend of grenache and syrah): Glass-staining ruby. Aromas of dark berries, licorice and smoky spices, with a floral nuance gaining strength with air. Juicy, focused and nicely concentrated, offering hefty cassis and bitter cherry flavors brightened by a cracked pepper quality. A smoky note comes up on the long, spicedominated finish. This pungent wine is really showing its syrah right now. Score: 89-91 (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, May 2012)
