Falesco White Blend Umbria IGT Vitiano Bianco 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The Falesco Winery, owned by the brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella, both oenologists and deeply rooted in this territory between Lazio and Umbria regions, was established in Montefi ascone (Lazio, Viterbo province) in 1979. Recently Falesco has enriched its property with the acquisition of the Marciliano estate, of 260 hectares, which is situated on a wonderful hill south of Orvieto in the municipality of Montecchio. This Vermentino / Verdicchio white blend has attractive grassy, nutty aromas. This is a crisp, savoury white; the palate is medium-bodied, quite round, and shows fine length.

The climatic and pedologic characteristics of this territory are similar. The hills stretching from Montefi ascone to Orvieto are partly volcanic partly sedimentary in origin and both kinds of soil are particularly suited to the growing of vines as witnessed by the century-old tradition of the zone. In his book The foreign varietals cultivated in Italy S. Mondini affirms that as early as the 19th century several foreign varietals were cultivated in Lazio, some in quite remarkable proportions and specialized in the vineyards... Cabernet, Carignane, Gamay, Grenache, Merlot, Malbeck, Pinot, Sauvignon, Syrah... Lazio generally proves to be an area where the advantages from the cultivation of the foreign varietals are remarkable, especially for what concerns the ones coming from France.. In the countryside surrounding Rome, Frosinone and Viterbo it’s widely held that they contribute to the improvement of the local wine production. Read less

"soft-textured, caressing red that blossoms on the palate with layers of perfumed red fruit and sweet French oak" from Wine Advocate; high viscosity; great bargain

have never had a white wine with the characteristics quite like this falesco. no dry or sweet notes what so ever, this is what i imagine an old world rustic white table wine to be. actually brought it home for christmas and it went very well with turkey dinner {stuffing, mashed potatoes, the whole nine yards} like the reviewer from wine.com states, very nice pear notes and a completely balanced wine, all the flavor and body from start to finish. what a great buy for a perfect wine to pair with a multitude of dishes.

A very nice wine; served to us in Todi, Umbria by a local innkeeper. Bordeaux-style, at a fraction of the price, moderate tannin, pleasant, more complex than many Italian varietals in its price range...

Dried apricot and lemon character on the nose, with hints of mineral. Medium-bodied, with an oaky, creamy vanilla character, combined with the fruit. Straightforward. Drink now.

The 2008 Vitiano Bianco (Verdicchio, Vermentino) is a pretty, taut wine with expressive perfumed fruit and a long polished finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011.

The stainless steel tank-aged 2003 Vitiano Bianco (a blend of 34% Vermentino, 33% Viognier, and 33% Verdicchio) exhibits lovely ripe, exotic, honeysuckle, and peach notes intermixed with pear and pine needle-like aromas. With loads of charm, plenty of fruit, and a dry, refreshing finish, it should be consumed over the next year.
