Falesco Vitiano Umbria IGT 2004

Member Review by drdebs:

Great value in this excellent sangiovese/cabernet/merlot blend. Deep, dark ruby in color. Aromas of earth and herbs give way to a palate of cherries, chocolate, eucalyptus, and herbs. More earth on the finish. Fruit is secondary to abundant other flavors. Ideal pizza/pasta wine. Exceptionally complex for a wine at this price point.

The hills stretching from Montefi ascone to Orvieto are partly volcanic partly sedimentary in origin and both kinds of soil are particularly suited to the growing of vines as witnessed by the century-old tradition of the zone. In his book The foreign varietals cultivated in Italy S. Mondini affirms that as early as the 19th century several foreign varietals were cultivated in Lazio, some in quite remarkable proportions and specialized in the vineyards... Cabernet, Carignane, Gamay, Grenache, Merlot, Malbeck, Pinot, Sauvignon, Syrah... Lazio generally proves to be an area where the advantages from the cultivation of the foreign varietals are remarkable, especially for what concerns the ones coming from France.. In the countryside surrounding Rome, Frosinone and Viterbo it’s widely held that they contribute to the improvement of the local wine production. Read less
