In his book The foreign varietals cultivated in Italy S. Mondini affirms that as early as the 19th century several foreign varietals were cultivated in Lazio, some in quite remarkable proportions and specialized in the vineyards... Cabernet, Carignane, Gamay, Grenache, Merlot, Malbeck, Pinot, Sauvignon, Syrah... Lazio generally proves to be an area where the advantages from the cultivation of the foreign varietals are remarkable, especially for what concerns the ones coming from France..
