Falesco Vitiano Rosato Umbria IGT 2009
External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:
A bright, vibrant pink with flashes of hazy purple in the glass. Aromas of fruit (strawberry, black cherry) and crisp, acidic aromas are evident a few seconds after the first pour. The body is refreshingly light - deceptively so, actually, for a wine comprised mainly of Cabernet, Merlot and the powerful Sangiovese. These grapes become evident on the finish, which is long and pleasant.

The 2009 Rosato from Vitiano, Riccardo Cotarella's winery on the Umbria/Lazio border, is ridiculously good for the money. A well-articulated floral bouquet leads to berries, dried flowers and minerals. In 2009 I especially like the way the Rosato balances clarity and richness. This is a harmonious, polished effort from Vitiano. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2011.

The 2008 Vitiano Rosé from Riccardo Cotarella's Falesco is a gorgeous, rewarding wine, especially for the money. Generous strawberry jam and raspberry flavors emerge from this medium to full-bodied offering. The Vitiano Rosato is beautifully-balanced, poised wine that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2010

The wine's color is vibrant ruby pink and its aromas recall candied berry fruit, blueberries and dusty minerals. In all, it offers many layers of nuances and boasts a nice, velvety mouthfeel.

The 2005 Vitiano Rosé is a blend of 30% Merlot, 30% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Aleatico (which Cotarella believes provides personality and perfume). Its big, sweet nose of strawberries, plums, cranberries, and flowers is followed by an equally fruity, dry, medium-bodied rosé possessing abundant personality. It should be drunk during the first year of life. Kudos to Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella for continuing to deliver remarkable wines at these prices.

Made with a portion of the juice from the regular Vitiano, separated from the skins after 24 hours. Fresh, with clean fruit, it is perfect for summer sipping or with grilled fish or shellfish.
