Falesco Red Blend Lazio IGT 2005

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

This unique red dessert wine is made from the Aleatico grape, hand-harvested in small quantities in late September. The must is fermented in stainless steel to preserve its freshness and dark, ruby-red color. Slightly sweet but clean and fresh, it is best served with fruit or light pastries.

The climatic and pedologic characteristics of this territory are similar. The hills stretching from Montefi ascone to Orvieto are partly volcanic partly sedimentary in origin and both kinds of soil are particularly suited to the growing of vines as witnessed by the century-old tradition of the zone. In his book The foreign varietals cultivated in Italy S. Mondini affirms that as early as the 19th century several foreign varietals were cultivated in Lazio, some in quite remarkable proportions and specialized in the vineyards... Cabernet, Carignane, Gamay, Grenache, Merlot, Malbeck, Pinot, Sauvignon, Syrah... Lazio generally proves to be an area where the advantages from the cultivation of the foreign varietals are remarkable, especially for what concerns the ones coming from France.. In the countryside surrounding Rome, Frosinone and Viterbo it’s widely held that they contribute to the improvement of the local wine production. Read less

This rare wine (only 2,000 bottles produced) is made from 100% Aleatico, a grape variety grown mainly in two small areas of Italy. Dark ruby red in color, it has a perfumed scent reminiscent of plum jam and cassis. When you first sip it, it shows its sweetness and you taste mature red fruits, like ripe red cherries. As you swallow, the tannins and acidity assert themselves leading you to the blueberry-like flavors on the finish. Well balanced, with a pleasant interplay of flavors, this wine is perfect at the end of a meal with pastries, or as a liquor by itself.

Made from 100% Aleatico grown in the tiny Bolsena vineyard situated 800 feet above sea level. Dr. Cotarella and his students from the University of Viterbo deduced that the volcanic soils are the perfect match for Aleatico. 1.6 tons per acre are hand-harvested in late September, and the wine is fermented in stainless steel. Slightly sweet but clean and fresh, Pomele is the ultimate dessert wine, best served with fruit, light pastries and crostata (fruit jam pie).
