Falesco Merlot Umbria IGT Pesano 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Faelsco have always paid attention to Merlot and are convinced that few other territories can allow this variety to express its full potential. They are able to achieve rich grapes from the best vineyards on the hills around Orvieto, where the exposure and setting, together with the soil, are fundamental for their perfect ripening. Through an appropriate vinification technique all this results in wines with great structure and a varietal character. Falesco Merlot, which is aged for six months in small French oak barrels, has a very deep colour. The scents are wide, rich, soft and spicy and the aromas are noble, well balanced and harmonious with an extremely long lingering finish.

The hills stretching from Montefi ascone to Orvieto are partly volcanic partly sedimentary in origin and both kinds of soil are particularly suited to the growing of vines as witnessed by the century-old tradition of the zone. In his book The foreign varietals cultivated in Italy S. Mondini affirms that as early as the 19th century several foreign varietals were cultivated in Lazio, some in quite remarkable proportions and specialized in the vineyards... Cabernet, Carignane, Gamay, Grenache, Merlot, Malbeck, Pinot, Sauvignon, Syrah... Lazio generally proves to be an area where the advantages from the cultivation of the foreign varietals are remarkable, especially for what concerns the ones coming from France.. In the countryside surrounding Rome, Frosinone and Viterbo it’s widely held that they contribute to the improvement of the local wine production. Read less

The nose showed savory mushroom a bit floral with licorice. On the palate, I found raspberry and sour cherry with a medium finish. Not bad for the price.
