The climatic and pedologic characteristics of this territory are similar. The hills stretching from Montefi ascone to Orvieto are partly volcanic partly sedimentary in origin and both kinds of soil are particularly suited to the growing of vines as witnessed by the century-old tradition of the zone. In his book The foreign varietals cultivated in Italy S. Mondini affirms that as early as the 19th century several foreign varietals were cultivated in Lazio, some in quite remarkable proportions and specialized in the vineyards... RP 94 - Cotarella's flagship wine, his 100% Merlot called Montiano, is aged in 100% new oak casks for 12 months, and bottled with neither fining nor filtration. The terrific opaque purple-coloured 1998 Montiano exhibits a spectacular bouquet of black cherry liqueur, liquorice, and toasty vanillin. The wine explodes on the palate, offering copious quantities of glycerine, cassis, black cherries, and blackberries. As it sits in the glass, aromas and flavours of melted chocolate and toasty oak emerge. The finish lasts for 40+ seconds
