Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

"Bright medium red. Initially reticent aromas of wild red berries and medicinal herbs are joined by a note of cherry liqueur as the wine opens in the glass. Silky, sweet and light on its feet; conveys explosive inner-mouth perfume, with a powerful crushed stone element contributing sappy energy. The longest and strongest on the back end of these 2008s to this point, with the berry and crushed stone flavors complicated by a savory character...93-96" IWC 03/10

Once the sulfur blows off this is a lovely wine to smell rich with iron, flowers, and wild berry notes that turn towards lingonberry. Complicating scents of smoke, spice and earth fill out the subtle, layered nose and are quite seductive. In the mouth the wine remians quite tight with a very focused, slightly hard core of minerality and drying tannins keeping much under wraps. The finish is very iron rich but stuccato and short with faint echoes of fruit and spice. leave this alone for 5-6 years

Good full, medium red. Deep but somewhat reserved aromas of wild red berries, minerals, iodine and spicy oak, lifted by a floral topnote. Wonderfully concentrated, silky and sweet, with almost shocking early sex appeal. This really stains the palate on the back end, finishing with terrific energy, sweetness and lingering perfume. It's hard to imagine anyone not liking this style. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 10, Stephen Tanzer

Bright medium red. Medicinal black cherry, licorice and a stony element on the nose. Large-scaled, powerful and penetrating, with a sappy small-berry intensity and an exhilarating balance of sweetness and acidity. Finishes with crushed stone and saline nuances and outstanding lift. Wonderfully sappy Corton from what Hervet described as a normal yield of about 40 hectoliters per hectare. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 10, Stephen Tanzer

The longest and strongest on the back end of these 2008s to this point, with the berry and crushed stone flavors complicated by a savory character. I find this quite unforthcoming today, but this was nonetheless slated to be bottled in December. It will require a good decade of cellaring and should be very long-lived.
