Failla Syrah Napa Valley Phoenix Ranch 2009
The 2009 is just as exciting as past vintages. [On the 2006 vintage: 95 pts an Editors' Choice and the #1 Wine of 2008 in the Wine Enthusiast] An awesome syrah that proves that while size isn't everything it does matter. A major league wine brilliantly paced with currant black cherry licorice and pepper flavors whose power is hard to exaggerate. For all that the wine never loses its balance and sense of proportion. So good now you won't be able to keep your hands off it but it should hold for six years.
This wine has a very nice floral nose but fruit a bit closed. Palate is a soft, a bit flat and tannins more dominant than I expected. I have heard great things about the Failla Phoenix but I was looking for the fruit to shine more.
Deep purple color, a distinct blueberry flavor, tons of mushroom and bell peppers and dry woody tannins. Wine Enthusiast's #1 wine of 2008...
I am usually a white zin or riesling girl, but this syrah is the only red variety I have ever really actually liked and said I would drink again...if only I could find it!
