Failla Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

At dinner - A big wine, packed with red and black fruit in a medium bodied, rather flannelly package that comes off as a bit thickerthan I might like but the flavors are fresh and balanced, and the texture does make this easy to enjoy. the finish is long and shows some nice spice tones. Very solid. 90pts

History of the Brand While the history of Failla (pronounced FAY-la) is short it is not without its complexities. Founded as Failla Jordan in 1998, it took its name from the husband-and-wife team of winemaker Ehren Jordan and fellow debtor Anne-Marie Failla. That year we planted our Estate vineyard on the Sonoma Coast and began buying fruit for our first releases, the very Rhône-style ‘98 Alban Vineyard Viognier and ‘98 Que Syrah Syrah. However, after three vintages under the Failla Jordan label, the must hit the fan and we got into a legal dust-up with Jordan Vineyards and Winery. When the smoke cleared, we had agreed to cease using Ehren’s last name to avoid trampling tender trademark toes and, putting our best foot (and better half) forward, we continued with simply "Failla". Many folks have asked us why we didn’t just pick a fanciful name in the first place instead of playing roulette with our own surnames. Well, we never found ruins of missions, limestone kilns, stone walls or barns on our property, just several old trailers. Existing plants on the ranch include such wine-incompatible flora as agave (shot of tequila anyone?) and bay trees (boiled crabs anyone?). And geographic features on our local topo maps sport monikers such as Brain Ridge, Gualala River, and Hell Hole. We debuted as "Failla" with a new Chuck House-designed label in the fall of 2002. Our original label, designed by Anne-Marie's sister Marybeth, has been archived and our first three vintages (stragglers safely socked away in our personal cellar) will join either the pantheon of collectors' items or the fraternity of the oddities bin. Cherry spice, bright and sweet smelling with a bit of an herbed backbone. Great oak, great fruit, clean with a hint of deeper berries, some raspberry, smooth delicious mouthfeel, well balanced acidity and an eternal finish of popped corn of toast. 600 cases made.

A cloudy brick to pink in color. Earthy aromas with hist of plum and alcohol. Crisp sour cherry after my first sip. The initial bite of sour cherries mellowed into a delicious smooth and well balanced combination of cherry, plum and just a hint of coffee. Very well balanced.

A spice bomb made from the fruit of young vines at Hirsch and Keefer Ranch. It had some fresh red fruit but mainly it brought all sorts of spice in large quantities from clove to ginger to orange peel to cinnamon - delicious.

Delightful with juicy raspberries, white pepper and even a hint of white chocolate along with an underlying cola-ness.

We visited Failla last year and picked up a 1/2 case each of the Sonoma/Keefer Ranch Pinots & Phoenix Ranch Syrah. This is a slight favorite over the Sonoma - immediately drinkable with great cherry & raspberry flavors - smooth finish. Not a classic but very enjoyable - we're stashing some for another year or two.

Dried cherries flowers mint and sweet tobacco all abound in Failla s 2012 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast). Soft and nicely perfumed throughout the 2012 appears to be best suited to near and medium-term drinking given its delicate understated personality. This is a solid entry-level offering from Failla although I miss the depth of some prior vintages likely the result of the generous yields of 2012. Antonio Galloni.

This is a fine Pinot for drinking now. It’s dry and brisk with coastal acidity, firm tannins and elaborate raspberry, cherry and persimmon flavors, touched by sweet, smoky oak.

The 2011 Pinot Noir from Failla is a testament to how good wine can be, even in a tough vintage. Lovely high-toned raspberry and cherry fruit character with floral aromatics and excellent acidity.
