F E Trimbach Riesling Cuvee Frederick Emile Alsace 2003
"White Wine Riesling by Trimbach from Alsace, France. This wine is pale golden in color with a greenish tinge. On the nose it has developed aromas of minerals, with a slight petrol note. On the palate it is full, again slightly mineral, with grapefruit and lemon-like fruit. The ripeness is balanced... "
Nose of petrol with background notes of something floral (lavender?), unpinned by aged honey. Tastes initially of steely smoothness, with metallic flinty flavours against a smooth backdrop of lime / citrus. Rounded, mature flavours.
A colleague mentioned that he and his band of rollicking rapscallions ordered this Riesling at a raw bar! I was shocked and had to try. The mineral aspect is right on.
