Excelsior Cabernet Sauvignon Robertson 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

86 points Wine Spectator: Solid, with a direct beam of cassis, fleshy plum, toasty vanilla and black licorice notes and a polished, easy finish. Drink now. (8/31/14) This delicious, crowd pleasing Cabernet -- consistently named a Wine Enthusiast Best Buy -- delivers serious bang for the buck! It's packed with lip smacking flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry and plum, with subtle hints of dark chocolate and spice.

TASTING NOTES: This delicious, crowd pleasing Cabernet – consistently named a Wine Enthusiast “Best Buy” – delivers serious bang for the buck! It’s packed with lip smackingcflavors of blackcurrant, black cherry and plum, with subtle hints of dark chocolatecand spice. VINEYARDS: Excelsior’s vineyards are characterized mostly by calcareous clay soils, with some parcels planted to shale. These limestone-rich soils are well drained, which allows the vines to stress, resulting in small, concentrated berries. The Cabernet vines range from 4 to 23 years of age. Robertson experiences afternoon winds that cool the vineyards on hot days. VINTAGE: 2012 is widely regarded as the greatest vintage Robertson has ever experienced, with the vines producing excellent quality fruit along with generous yields. Weather conditions remained warm and dry throughout the harvest season without the typical late summer heat waves, resulting in extremely healthy grapes that were able to be harvested at peak ripeness. VINIFICATION AND MATURATION: The grapes were hand harvested, de-stemmed and crushed. The wine was fermented in closed stainless steel tanks until dry, with pumpovers of one hour performed twice daily. 40% of the wine was aged in a combination of French and American oak for nine months. - Winery Varietal Blend: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Petit Verdot Alcohol Content: 14.5% TA: 5.45 g/l pH: 3.6 RS: 2.51 g/l
