Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Illahe 2007

Member Review by Eric Guido:

On the nose, I found raspberry dusted in confectioners sugar with earth tones and hints of green stems. On the palate, it was like velvet, as cherry and spicy clove enveloped my senses. The finish is fresh yet lingered on with wild berries and a bit of cedar.

Nestled on a lower terrace of the Eola-Amity Hills’ eastern slope in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, our east facing 13 acre estate vineyard, Le Puits Sec, was planted in 1986. The soils are primarily basalt-derived volcanic and very well-drained, thus yielding pinot noir with great structure and at the same time aromatic and with finesse. As well, chardonnay and the Alsatian varieties thrive in this micro-climate, producing intensely varietal yet subtle wines. Evesham Wood obtained organic certification for both our estate vineyard and winery from Oregon Tilth in 2000. In addition, we are charter members of the Deep Roots Coalition, an advocacy group for wines produced exclusively from non-irrigated vines. Since 2005 Evesham Wood has been associated with the international organic/biodynamic organization, “Renaissance des Appellations”, whose members are required to adhere to rigid organic and quality standards. Very light red color with a nose of soil, graphite and tar with blackberry fruit buried deep beneath. The palate has filled out nicely since my last tasting giving it a softer and more velvety feel and showing raspberry fruit, earth, leather and black pepper. I've got to say that this Pinot has really rounded out over the past few months and now I'm wishing I'd purchased more.
