Etude Winery Pinot Noir 2016

External Review:

Ruby and garnet in color, this Pinot Noir offers aromas of black cherry, Asian spice and sous bois that are lifted by a concentrated fresh fruit core. Consistent with the nose, the palate also demonstrates the qualities of a well balanced Pinot Noir: refined tannins, bright acidity, a generous mouthfeel and a lingering finish.

Etude Wines is dedicated to mastering the craft of winegrowing. In classical music, an etude is a composition with a technical focus that allows the musician to practice a particular technique. Similarly, Etude wines are the product of deliberate concentration on the instructive variables of the craft. The end game is not edification alone, but rather the wine itself as a source of enjoyment. Chopin piano etudes are notoriously difficult but sublimely beautiful… this is an example of the practicing craft transformed to art. Founder and self described winegrower Tony Soter puts it this way: “There’s no better vehicle with which to study or practice the craft of winemaking than Pinot Noir. It is the most challenging, unforgiving and quixotic of all wine grapes, and yet the most delicate and transparent.” “Make no mistake it is a humbling pursuit, but when it’s right, Pinot Noir is a glorious and moving thing. It is in the pursuit of that experience that we all work.” Laboring alongside Soter in this oenological quest for perfection are veteran winemaker Jon Priest and viticulturalist Franci Ashton. Together, this talented trio works to transform the very finest Carneros and Napa Valley grapes into world-class wines sought out by the most discriminating wine lovers. In addition to its widely acclaimed Carneros Pinot Noir and legendary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Etude has also developed a loyal following for Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Merlot. Read less

The outstanding 2006 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast offers sweet pomegranate, cherry, and currants notes intermixed with spice and earth in a delicate, almost Cotes de Beaune-like style. The color is medium ruby, the wine moderate in body, but with beautiful sweetness and harmony. It should drink nicely for 5-6 years.

Good deep ruby-red color. With, rather exotic aroma of liqueur-like black cherry. Big, rich and dry, with very good inner-mouth aromatic character to the black cherry and licorice flavors. This big but slightly unrefined pinot finishes with rather powerful tannins.

With its spicy, wild berry and pine notes, this Pinot Noir bears Failla's distinctive mark. It's a dry, complex and exotic young wine, brisk in acidity and wonderfully silky and elegant in the mouth. If you're into flavor identifiers, they're wild raspberries and cherries. Good price for a fine Failla wine. Best now and for the next six years.

There are 250 cases of the 2003 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast (a declassified young-vine cuvee from the Keefer and Hirsch Vineyards). Sweet currants, cherries, cola, and a hint of kirsch jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, attractive effort. It possesses a plum/ruby color along with loads of flavor and complexity. I actually liked the declassified cuvee better than the Keefer Ranch. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.
