What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Winemakers Notes

The 2005 vintage marks the inaugural release of our Temblor Pinot Noir, the second vineyard designated Pinot Noir from the Etude Estate Vineyards. These vineyards are tucked away in the far northwest corner of the Carneros Appellation and feature well-drained, rocky upland soils. The site includes six different soil types and a wide variety of topographical features. The vineyard parcels were customized to conform to the various soil types and the changing contours of the topography. The diverse sites on this beautiful property allow us to highlight certain portions of the vineyard by illustrating read more...the variations of wine character attributable to different soil series and microclimates. The Temblor Vineyard is located on a gradual slope that faces East. The soils here are very well drained, with tightly packed volcanic boulders and cobbles braided throughout - a result of the Rodgers Creek Fault line which is adjacent to the vineyard. This site is directly influenced by the Petaluma Gap, causing the fog to develop early and recede late in the day. The gradual slopes and moderate microclimate allow for even vine growth and fruit ripening. While rich and full of flavor, the wines are built with a softer structure; finesse and grace. Concentrated pure fruit aromas of cherries and frambois strawberries with a hint of spice and earth begin the nose of this graceful Pinot Noir. The palate bursts with cherry and dark raspberry flavors with a smoky note that leads to round and velvety tannins. This well-structured and perfectly balanced wine offers an inviting minerality and bright acidity that will contribute to the wine's longevity. Accolades Wine Enthusiast | Cellar Selection
This is Etude's inaugural bottling of this wine, a block designation from the estate. It shows not only classic Carneros quality, but something exotic. Dry and complex, the wine has cherry, cassis, raspberry and new oak flavors, with good acidity. That extra something is a feral, earthy quality, suggesting olive tapenade, sweet leather, tobacco and mushrooms that has got to come from terroir. Youthfully great now, and should age effortlessly for the next 8 to 10 years.    (hide)
