Etude Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

The Cabernet harvest of 2002 may be a vintage to rival any in recent history and may in fact be one of the strongest in the last three decades. Whether it proves to be the case or not, we are excited about many new fruit sources supplying the Etude Cabernet program. The wines are opulent with real substance, structure and persistence; not a false sense of flesh from too low an acid or too much alcohol. They are ultra ripe in a most satisfying way. Certainly the extrovert to the more reserved and classic 2001, the wines of the 2002 vintage are more reminiscent of 1999s. It is another vintage that is very successful in pushing the limits of balance by doing so in a most compellingly hedonistic way. The blend for the 2002 bottling consists of Cabernet Sauvignon (95%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). The wine spends a minimum of 24 months in French oak barrels (80% new). The components are aged separately for approximately 12 months, the assemblage is then crafted and the blend is returned to bar els for an additional year of aging before bottling. Captivating while youthful, this wine is wildly aromatic. Classic black cherry and currants begin the nose on this wine and lead into layers of espresso, vanilla and raspberry liquor. A rich, lush entry engages the palate with black fruits, roasted coffee beans and brown spices that surround silky soft mouth-filling tannins. A voluptuous wine with powerful structure and intensity, it is nothing short of inspiring and further underscores why this varietal is one of the major pursuits at Etude. Wine Spectator Rated 94 A very stylish wine that's plush, rich and concentrated, offering an array of spicy currant, cedary oak, anise, herb and mineral flavors that are soothing, winning points for its polished texture and firm yet gentle tannins. Best from 2006 through 2013. (James Laube) October 31, 2005 Wine Advocate Rated 93 The classic 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa merits my highest marks. Revealing powerful, potent black currant fruit along with licorice, smoke, camphor and new oak, this dense, full-bodied, ripe, moderately tannic Cabernet will hit its prime in 2-4 years, and should last for 12-15. (Robert M. Parker Jr.) February 28, 2005 Wine Enthusiast Rated 93 It's a classic Napa Cab from what has turned out to be a fine vintage. There's the velvety cassis and chocolate fruit ripeness you expect, and the lavish oak, but good tannins and acids prevent the decadent flavors from turning flabby. December 1, 2005

Etude Wines is dedicated to mastering the craft of winegrowing. In classical music, an etude is a composition with a technical focus that allows the musician to practice a particular technique. Similarly, Etude wines are the product of deliberate concentration on the instructive variables of the craft. The end game is not edification alone, but rather the wine itself as a source of enjoyment. Chopin piano etudes are notoriously difficult but sublimely beautiful… this is an example of the practicing craft transformed to art. Founder and self described winegrower Tony Soter puts it this way: “There’s no better vehicle with which to study or practice the craft of winemaking than Pinot Noir. It is the most challenging, unforgiving and quixotic of all wine grapes, and yet the most delicate and transparent.” “Make no mistake it is a humbling pursuit, but when it’s right, Pinot Noir is a glorious and moving thing. It is in the pursuit of that experience that we all work.” Laboring alongside Soter in this oenological quest for perfection are veteran winemaker Jon Priest and viticulturalist Franci Ashton. Together, this talented trio works to transform the very finest Carneros and Napa Valley grapes into world-class wines sought out by the most discriminating wine lovers. In addition to its widely acclaimed Carneros Pinot Noir and legendary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Etude has also developed a loyal following for Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Merlot. Read less

Good mix of blackberry, cherry cola, and cassis with hints of leather, tea leaf and toast. Well balanced with plenty of acid and still firm but smooth tannins. Fairly long, peppery finish.

The superb 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa has superb aromatics of white chocolate, black currants, lavender, and spice box. This concentrated, deep, chewy 2002 should drink well for 10-12 years. The blockbuster 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa came from two sources, the Morisoli Vineyard in St. Helena and the Cohn Vineyard in Rutherford (the source for the famous Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon).
