Etude Cab 1999

Winemaker's Notes:

Heady pure fruit aromas of dark red fruit, black plum, black cherry and mocha leap from the glass of this classic Cabernet Sauvignon and lead into layers of warm baking spices and anise. The palate is full of rich fruit supported by supple tannins that are long and fine. An opulent Cabernet Sauvignon with powerful structure and intensity that underscores why this varietal is one of the major pursuits at Etude. The 1999 vintage rewarded us with fully-developed Cabernet Sauvignon with supple and ripe tannins. Bud-break started relatively early and berry set was smaller than average. By early September, the grapes were on the verge of full development. Shortly after Labor Day, the dry northeast winds brought hot continental temperatures into the valley. This effectively brought on fast maturity to the grapes right at the end of ripening. The dry winds concentrated an already small yield and the high temperatures brought a level of flavor ripeness generally not reached without extended time on the vine. The resulting wines are heady, powerful and delicious. The Etude Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is handcrafted from several unique vineyards representing the major benchland sub-appellations of Napa Valley: Rutherford, St. Helena, Oakville and Calistoga. By deliberately sourcing fruit from this range of exemplary sources, the assembled wine attains the important range of expression and nuance that gives this wine its depth of character. The blend for the 1999 bottling consists of Cabernet Sauvignon (99%) with a touch of Cabernet Franc (.5%) and Malbec (.5%). The wine spent a minimum of 24 months in French oak barrels (80% new). The components were aged separately for approximately 12 months, the assemblage was then crafted and the blend was returned to barrels for an additional 10 months of aging before bottling.

Etude Wines is dedicated to mastering the craft of winegrowing. In classical music, an etude is a composition with a technical focus that allows the musician to practice a particular technique. Similarly, Etude wines are the product of deliberate concentration on the instructive variables of the craft. The end game is not edification alone, but rather the wine itself as a source of enjoyment. Chopin piano etudes are notoriously difficult but sublimely beautiful… this is an example of the practicing craft transformed to art. Founder and self described winegrower Tony Soter puts it this way: “There’s no better vehicle with which to study or practice the craft of winemaking than Pinot Noir. It is the most challenging, unforgiving and quixotic of all wine grapes, and yet the most delicate and transparent.” “Make no mistake it is a humbling pursuit, but when it’s right, Pinot Noir is a glorious and moving thing. It is in the pursuit of that experience that we all work.” Laboring alongside Soter in this oenological quest for perfection are veteran winemaker Jon Priest and viticulturalist Franci Ashton. Together, this talented trio works to transform the very finest Carneros and Napa Valley grapes into world-class wines sought out by the most discriminating wine lovers. In addition to its widely acclaimed Carneros Pinot Noir and legendary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Etude has also developed a loyal following for Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Merlot. Read less

Saturated ruby. Restrained somewhat oaky aromas of blueberry blackberry and dark chocolate; in need of a racking. Juicy high-pitched and floral with compellingly sweet flavor of crystallized dark berries. Not as big as the 97 Etude cabernet but impressively smooth and even for the vintage. Finishes with substantial but ripe tannins and a late burst of oak. A strong effort for 98-no surprise in light of Soter s success in the similarly tricky 1993 vintage. 90-92 points Stephen Tanzers IWC.

The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is an impressive effort. An opaque ruby/purple color is followed by a soft, precocious, evolved, up-front style with gorgeous black fruits, medium to full body, soft tannin, and good fatness allied to elegance and sup...
