Estancia Zinfandel 2012
Editorial Reviews for Estancia Zinfandel
A bit oaky and smoky with briary black raspberry fruit on the nose. Pretty juicy on entry with a nice, medium weight that shows off bright acids and soft tannins, though the tannins are a bit woody. The mid-palate shows slightly simple cherry and raspberry fruit accented with judiciously used oak and a touch of herb. Finishes with restraint and more zesty red berry fruit. Plays it safe, a nice Claret-styled Zin. 87pts
Not one of my all time favorite Zins, but is a nice option to bring to a dinner party when you are on a budget. Light and ripe raspberry with a little bit of funk makes this just interesting enough.
Pleasantly surprised that this is on the gentle side of Zins in California. It's similar to a good Italian Primitivo (the parent of Zinfandel, or identical twin). It is not distractingly high in alcohol. It has very gentle tannins, that smooth out the slightly oaky attack. The wine is jammy and has a lovely smooth finish. Very drinkable, with food or on its' own.

Good value Zin. Nice and jammy with a smooth finish. Was good with BBQ (smoked brisket and ribs).

A little extra bottle time has helped develop more non-fruit notes, enhancing the smoky, herbal qualities of the wine. Pair it with lamb or falafel to let the flavors loose.
This Zinfandel follows in the footsteps of other Estancia varietals - consistent best buys, excellent values and true expressions of the grape. Here we find characteristic bramble flavors, ripe black currant and chocolate. The wine has good density, a rich mouthfeel and a silken, sweet finish.
Made from 100% Zinfandel, this is a quintessential California wine! Jammy boysenberry and cranberry fruit are piqued by cinnamon and pepper, making a soft, rich treat.
Boysenberry jam, cranberry, licorice and cinnamon are balanced by fleshy, soft tannin and a smooth, velvety finish.
Rating: 83/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. Lower in alcohol but sporting suggestions of underripe grapes in the mix, this wine is also a bit sharp in palatefeel and does not find the fruity depth and mass to overcome its shortcomings. It seems unlikely to benefit from cellaring.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.
