In the heart of Alentejo region, 180 Km east of Lisbon, in Reguengos de Monsaraz, the Herdade do Esporão was aquired by Finagra with the main porpuse of producing wines of great quality. From 1975 until 1979, the Herdade do Esporão was occupied during the revolutionary and agricultural periods. Only after this period Finagra was allowed to proceed the winery project. Our modern cellars were built in 1987. A new stage of Finagra project was acomplished. In 1989 the first wine "Esporão" was considered one of the best Portuguese wines and three years later the brand "Monte Velho" was launched. In 1995, after our brands were considered among the best ones, new investments were made. A new area of vineyard was planted and the existent was completely renovated. A dam with 4.000.000 m3 capacity was built, feeding a drip irrigation system that covers all the vineyard. The purchase of Perdigões Estate, with 180 ha of vineyards, the expansion of the cellar and the construction of the wine tourism complex are some of the most recent investments of this dinamic company developing the "Herdade do Esporão". A blend of native varietals Antao Vaz, Roupeiro, and Arinto all vinified separately and blended together. 50% of the wine is fermented in French oak barrels and aged for 6 months and 50% is stainless steel fermented then blended. Aromatic nose of ripe peach, orange blossoms, tropical notes of banana's and cream. Medium to full bodied, juicy acidity, medium + alcohol 13.5% abv, well balanced and integrated oak leading to a zippy fat finish. The palate has underlying minerality and ripe stone fruit characteristics. If someone poured this for me and told me it was chardonnay I would certainly be fooled though not the rich buttery oaky California Chard, I would have guessed this a dead ringer for good quality white Burgundy. This wine has great acidity considering its grown in Southern Portugal and it does not undergo any malolactic fermentation. This is certainly an eye opening wine and again proves that Portugal is full of wonderful surprises. 4/5

Intense garnet color, strong aromas of spices and red fruits wrapped in vanilla and chocolate notes. On the palate, it is elegant and long with layers of ripe fruit over strong tannins that provide a very persistent finish.

A deep ruby color, lifted red berry fruit aromatics, and a soft, elegant, well balanced palate, with good depth of ripe fruit and fine supportive tannins.
