Esk Valley Pinot Gris 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Situated in the north of New Zealand’s picturesque Hawkes Bay, at Bay View is The Esk Valley Estate winery. The winery sources fruit from Hawkes Bay, including the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels and Marlborough, as both regions consistently produce grapes of an extremely high quality. Esk Valley is a boutique winery, but it is unique in that many of the techniques used to craft its award-winning wines are dictated by the winery itself. The old concrete vats, the layout of the buildings, and the absence of modern technology mean the people at Esk Valley have had to make wine in a simple, honest, hands-on way. The people at Esk Valley are as important to the wine-making process as the vines and the high quality grapes they produce. The main pre-requisite for working at Esk Valley is a genuine passion and excitement for wine. This 'Pinot Gris' utilises fruit from a variety of Hawkes Bay vineyard sites. The Kaybay and Barbar vineyards in the Esk Valley in the north of the Bay are planted on river silts, as is the Johnson Vineyard on the banks of the Tutaekuri River. The Keltern Vineyard at Maraekakaho is situated on a shingle river terrace of the Ngaruroro River. All the vineyards are trained on a VSP trellising system and are intensively managed to provide ripe fruit at low yields. This is a full bodied and rich style of Pinot Gris. Barrel fermentation has provided the wine with richness but without oak characters and the early picked sites have provided fresh, natural acidity to the finished blend. Aromatics and flavours of stone fruits and pears dominate with a hint of spice providing complexity. Try with soft cheeses or pork dishes.
