Winemakers Notes
Launched in 1999, Eroica is a labor of love for two of the world’s great Riesling producers.
One from the Old World, Dr. Loosen estate of Germany, and the other from the New
World, Chateau Ste. Michelle of Washington state. An intermingling of Old and New World
philosophies and techniques enables the crafting of an extraordinary Riesling from Washington
state grapes. Named for Beethoven’s Third Symphony, Eroica reflects not only its variety
and site, but also its heritage: bold and forward read more...
Editorial Reviews
This smells downright seductive with nuanced notes of crisp baking apple, mineral, almost a touch of spicy cinnamon, with notes of lemon verbena and bay leaf. While not totally dry this is blessed with very assertive acids that help reinforce the wonderful deep and fresh core of wild apple fruit with deep mineral cut and lovely precision that extends over the long finish. This is just so zesty and pure with a wonderful vibrancy that makes is delicious on it’s own and a great match for lightly salty/fatty bites like prosciutto or mature washed rind cheeses. 91pts
Vintage Notes
A “perfect” ripening season with full crop yields, and restrained sugar levels led to outstanding wines from Washington state’s Columbia Valley in 2008. Delayed slightly by cool spring weather and a moderate summer, harvest began 10 days later than normal. Warm weather in August provided ideal ripening conditions for grapes across all varietals and harvest was quickly ramped up in order to obtain fruit at the optimum ripeness.
Vineyard Notes
Eroica begins in the vineyard with Ernst Loosen and Chateau Ste. Michelle winemaker Bob Bertheau collaborating on site selection, irrigation management, crop levels and canopy management. They work with vineyard managers to adjust yields and manage fruit exposure to prolong the ripening season for added flavor development of these cooler climate vineyards. Vineyards in the cooler Yakima Valley provide amazing acidity and minerality. Viewcrest is the pinnacle of these vineyards, making the blend year after year. Evergreen Vineyard, near the town of George, Washington, contributes crisp lime and delicate peach flavors to the wine. Riesling grapes from our Horse Heaven Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA also contributed to the final blend.
Tasting Notes
“This Eroica shows the crisp acidity of the cooler 2008 vintage. The wine exudes mandarin orange and sweet lime aromas and flavors with subtle mineral notes. The mouth-watering acidity is beautifully balanced by flavorful Washington Riesling fruit. After a decade we have truly found our ‘Eroica style,’ striving for beautiful bright fruit with crisp acidity and enhanced minerality.”

Reviews for 2008 Vintage
My husband and I really love this wine, and he's not a wine guy! Perfect price and fantastic flavors. Not too alcoholic and strong sweetness and fruit flavors. Can't go wrong with this one!
I'd call this an approximate middle between some of the dry Alsatian versions, and the usually too-sweet German versions. I don't mind that off-sweetness, particularly where, as here, it is accompanied by good fruit - both apples & tropical, and it has a good crisp acidic counter-balnce. While at more than $20, it's arguably over-priced, I was able to get it at a net sale price of $14, which makes it a pretty reasonable value.
A reliably good riesling, do not drink as much since discovering some great Finger Lakes rieslings.
Of all the Rieslings I've had, and there have not been to many because the initial encounter with Riesling was not great. This I was very impressed with when I had it last nite. It had the fruit taste that I enjoy from the moscato, without being too fruity. Will definitely try this again.
I am super impressed with this effort. The usual flavors are there in force with maybe a little basil or asparagus or something in there to make it fun.
I am super impressed with this effort. The usual flavors are there in force with maybe a little basil or asparagus or something in there to make it fun. There were duplicate listings when I did my search, but this rating is cross posted with the chateau st Michelle.
Tasted at Chateau Ste. MIchelle. Very nice, off-dry, crisp Riesling with good acidity and a 11.5% alcohol level. Aromas of honey and peaches. The taste is full of lime with subtle mineral notes.
