Eroica Gold Riesling 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

75 grams per liter residual sugar 35% botrytis infected, natural occurring, Lime, peach and chalk appear on the nose followed by spicy botrytis aromas that make this almost gingery. Sweet/tart on entry, this has lots of acid hiding behind the obvious sweetness of the palate, which really brings out the peachy character here. The botrytis pops on the backend, which shows off a gingery creme brulee and peach pie character. This has great aromatics in lots of juicy acid refreshing the palate and driving the finish with its hint of honey and tart green apricot accents. This is fairly sweet, falling right between dessert level and table wine for me. Delicious but I’m not sure when I would serve this. 92pts

This is the first release of Gold Riesling from the Ste. Michelle–Loosen partnership; it’s a full wine with an element of botrytis, which the regular Eroica bottling rarely possesses. Full of ripe tropical flavor, this leads with scents of ripe peach and mango, adorned by saffron and smoke. It has the amplitude, the concentration and weight to ensure a long life, or to pair with sauerbraten.

This white is frankly sweet, with flavors of apricot and pear playing against hints of paprika and white pepper, lingering softly on the deft finish. Drink now through 2019.

A big, ripe and tropical effort, with hints of petrol, lychee and sugared peach, the 2012 Eroica Riesling Gold is medium-bodied, off-dry and balanced, with a clean finish. It’s borderline outstanding and has lots to love. Drink it over the coming couple of years.

A new entry in 2012, this shows the influence of botrytis, and is quite sweet with residual sugar at 75 g/L. It’s an interesting wine, though not nearly as complex and polished as the original Eroica. Here the lightly honeyed fruit crosses into a slightly bitter, phenolic finish, with a lingering metallic note.
