Ermitage Rouge le Pavillon Michel Chapoutier 1998

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 1998 Ermitage Le Pavillon flirts with perfection ... again. Revealinga striking bouquet of violets, blackberries, smoke, licorice, and minerals, itis luxuriously rich, full-bodied, and layered on the palate. It is a wine witha finish that lasts beyond a minute. Remarkably, yields were a mere 10hectoliters per hectare. There is plenty of tannin in the finish, but it isripe and well-integrated. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2050." 98/100points (Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - Feb-2001)

M. Chapoutier:
The name CHAPOUTIER is present in the Rhône Valley since 1808. In 1879, the distant ancestor Polydor CHAPOUTIER was the first to begin to buy vines, thus moving from the status of wine-grower of an estate to that of a viticulturist, a wine producer and a businessman. The pioneering spirit was already present in the family.

Medium ruby. Cool floral aromas of red berries violet cocoa powder graphite and spicy oak along with a whiff of smoked meat. Juicy sharply delineated and austere; a classic adamantly dry claret with superb intensity and grip. This is beginning to close up unlike the 99. But really expands on the very long perfumed finish. Tannins are dusty but even. 92(+?) points Stephen Tanzers IWC.

Gorgeous aromas of berry currant and exotic spices especially cinnamon. Medium- to full-bodied with layers of silky tannins and ripe berry and raspberry on the palate. An outstanding Margaux... Wine Spectator.
