Three friends and winemaking consultants were drawn to the village of Dosbarrios, in the Mesa de Ocana, 60 kilometres east of Toledo. by not only the beauty of the area, but by the potential of the calcerous clay vineyards for the production of fine wines Margarita Madrigal, Gonzalo Rodriguez and Alexandra Schmedes have honed their craft through many years of consultancy work in Spain and have brought this vast knowledge and ability together to produce their own wines and called them Ercavio, after a nearby old Roman settlement. They set about renovating the old property called La Plazuela, which dated back to 1851 and began the regeneration of 15 hectares of prime indigenous varieties such as Cencible (Tempranillo), Garnacha and Arien, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. The Blanco is made primarily of Arien and a small percentage of Sauvignon Blanc. By achieving low yields they are able to obtain ideal fruit for this young, fresh and fruity wine. The Tempranillo grapes for the Roble are harvested at perfect maturity and vinified by the combination of traditional and modern methods. After fermentation the wine is taken in tinajas (clay amphors) to the old winery for malolactic fermentation and maturation for 5 months in a combination of French and American oak. Their top cuvee is called ?La Plazuela? and pays homage to the terroir and the authentic varieties of Central Spain. Made from Cencible and Garnacha vineyards that are over 50 years old, it is fermented in tank to keep the freshness of the fruit, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel and maturation for 15 months in a combination of new and one year old French oak. I concur wholeheartedly with the previous reviews; a top-notch value from Spain with some complexity that belies price. Good density and rich black fruit on the palate with a good cypress and blackberry nose. Good, medium to long finish. Excellent value.

Robert Parker gave this 91 pts. It's a deep, rich tempranillo that is a great bargain at under $15 a bottle. Thick, dense and opulent wine.

Day 1: Muted nose; just a little muted dark fruit coming through. The palate starts off with plain plum and cherry notes, but this wine's finish is its winning characteristic- very rich blackberry, reminds me of Chambord. Unfortunately a nice finish doesn't make up for the rest of it. Day 2: A bit stronger nose/palate with dark fruit notes, but the finish isn't as strong.

This seemed to downplay the fruit and push forward the leather and earthy notes more than some other tempranillos.

Just to add to my comments on this wine. It is good now, but in my estimation could benefit by a year or two in the cellar. Complex, and able to age a bit.

Rich purple color in the glass, with a nice plum fruit and rich aroma. Medium mouth feel, clean and 7-10 second finish. Tannins present, in nice balance with acid. Nice to drink alone, and changed with addition of asiago hard cheese. Become more mellow, and paired well. With hard salami and gorgonzola stuffed green olives very nice, and picked up some spicy notes. A great value at $10-$12. Available at World Market.

Solid fruit. Not overpowering wood, leather, and spice are what make this wine truly interesting and worth more than a single glass.

Colorful, ribald and jammy wine that gets more floral and balanced as it opens. What starts out big and aggressive settles with time and should work with a wide range of foods. Sappy fruit is the forerunner, and there's heat as well.

A lush, full bodied Tempranillo bursting with black berry fruit. The texture is rich and soft around the edges for those drinkers that prefer a not too dry style. Impressive depth and flavor for this price point - a safe bet for fans of Cabernet or Shiraz.

There are 10,000 cases of the 2007 Ercavio Roble, made up of 100% Cencibel (Tempranillo) and aged for five months in French and American oak. A glass-coating opaque purple in color, it delivers an expressive nose of cedar, earth notes, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. Thick, dense, and opulent on the palate, it has gobs of savory black fruit, licorice and spice notes, enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years, and a lengthy finish. It totally over-delivers for its humble price. This is one to buy by the case.

A remarkable value. Aged 5 months in oak, this red is fragrant with spice box, tobacco, blueberry and blackberry aromas. Full bodied with gobs of fruit, a firm structure and a 40 second finish. Not back for under 10 bucks!

Deep ruby. Anise-accented blackberry and cassis aromas offer lovely straightforward appeal. Supple and sweet, with deep dark berry flavors supported by gentle acidity. Finishes with good grip and a lingering bitter chocolate quality. This is more serious than most wines in its price range.

A complex nose of black fruit and spice complements the palate, which is full-bodied, displaying rich notes of dark fruit and vanilla. Great spice accents rich blackberry, and finishes in a huge way, with hints of licorice and concentrated black cherry.
