Erath wines are an expression of the land that the winery has cultivated for more than 40 years, longer than any other winery in the Dundee Hills of Oregon. The red, iron-rich Jory soils, combined with gentle breezes and warming sunshine of a marine climate, have bestowed upon Dundee a terroir of note. It has given rise to the handcrafting phenomenon, and the art of Pinot. As one of Oregon’s wine pioneers, Dick Erath had always been as tenacious in his approach to Pinot as the Pinot grape is stubborn. The engineer-turned-viticulturist was first inspired to pursue winemaking in 1965 after an early garage experiment. After completing coursework at UC-Davis in 1968, Erath relocated his family from California to the untamed red hills of Dundee. An unheated logger’s cabin on 49 acres would serve as home – and ad hoc winery – for several years. The following spring, he planted the Dundee Hill’s first wine grapes – 23 varieties. Pinot Noir flourished. By 1972, Erath had produced his first commercial wine of 216 cases – the first official wine production in the Dundee Hills. Enchanted with French varietals, he soon began testing non-California clones and was instrumental in importing French clones to Oregon in 1974. In 1976, Erath broke ground on the first winery in the Dundee Hills. Early successes, including the 1982 Pinot Noir vintage, inspired leading winemakers to move to Oregon to forge their own path in this special place. Disciplined in approach yet progressive in artistry, our winemaker Gary Horner, strives to reveal classic Oregon Pinot: light, delicate and fruit-forward. Gary’s goal of “making the best Pinot Noir the region has to offer – time honored, authentic and uniquely Oregon” is matched by his reputation of excellence. Read less

As usual, light bodied - but this fleshes out a little more with time. Plenty red berry fruit, bing cherry and a little tartness, spice, a little earthiness with light tannins and good acidity. Drink now - Paul - 87 points

Excellent Pinot Noir! Very smooth with berry flavors subtle at first but keeps you coming back for more. I imagine this wine would be good aged for a couple of years.

The wine is light in color, and somewhat translucent, like many of the quality Pinot Noirs from the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The nose has some lovely fruit, blackberry and strawberry, with some lovely earthy notes, cedar and sagebrush, just like you might smell if you were walking through the valley. The taste is very pleasant, with berries and cherry notes teasing you at the outset, gradually transitioning to some wonderfully earthy spice notes, cracked pepper. The lovely, rather mild tannins lead you to some nice vanilla notes at the end, for a lovely, long and smooth finish that beckons you to take another sip! This lustrous beauty showcases aromas of raspberry pie with pleasing hints of mint, citrus and a provocative suggestion of smoke. Fresh and bright flavors on the palate are balanced with a blend of juicy cherry and racy pomegranate. An easy sipper yet enough acidity to pair beautifully with your favorite dish.

Founded in 1972 Erath Winery was one of the pioneers of Oregon Pinot Noir. When Chateau Ste. Michelle purchased it in 2006 it was their first entry into the Oregon winegrowing region and they've focused on continuing to turn out first rate, expressive Pinot Noirs like this 2012. I received a Gold Medal and a 90 point scored in the Critics Challenge Wine Competition. They said "Rich and plump, full-bodied, quite a chunky style of Pinot but has abundant fruit and decent underlying acidity. Good value."

Black cherry aromas, underscored by sweet mandarin orange, greet the nose as warm, clove-laced vanilla wafts gently among subtle hints of anise and caramel. The wine opens on the palate with more hints of sweet black cherry, which flows seamlessly into a supple silkiness.

Erath Vineyards in Oregon has a real hit with their entry level Pinot Noir in 2008. The Wine Spaectator said it has "true varietal character and Burgundian elegance." and Wine Enthusiast Magazine said it was "Light in texture, with pretty cherry and orange peel aromas and flavors playing against refreshing acidity, lingering nicely." A great value at under $20, don't miss it.
