Erath wines are an expression of the land that the winery has cultivated for more than 40 years, longer than any other winery in the Dundee Hills of Oregon. The red, iron-rich Jory soils, combined with gentle breezes and warming sunshine of a marine climate, have bestowed upon Dundee a terroir of note. It has given rise to the handcrafting phenomenon, and the art of Pinot. As one of Oregon’s wine pioneers, Dick Erath had always been as tenacious in his approach to Pinot as the Pinot grape is stubborn. The engineer-turned-viticulturist was first inspired to pursue winemaking in 1965 after an early garage experiment. After completing coursework at UC-Davis in 1968, Erath relocated his family from California to the untamed red hills of Dundee. An unheated logger’s cabin on 49 acres would serve as home – and ad hoc winery – for several years. The following spring, he planted the Dundee Hill’s first wine grapes – 23 varieties. Pinot Noir flourished. By 1972, Erath had produced his first commercial wine of 216 cases – the first official wine production in the Dundee Hills. Enchanted with French varietals, he soon began testing non-California clones and was instrumental in importing French clones to Oregon in 1974. In 1976, Erath broke ground on the first winery in the Dundee Hills. Early successes, including the 1982 Pinot Noir vintage, inspired leading winemakers to move to Oregon to forge their own path in this special place. Disciplined in approach yet progressive in artistry, our winemaker Gary Horner, strives to reveal classic Oregon Pinot: light, delicate and fruit-forward. Gary’s goal of “making the best Pinot Noir the region has to offer – time honored, authentic and uniquely Oregon” is matched by his reputation of excellence. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

cranberry, strawberry, raspberry, some slight earth-like qualities, light, simple easy drinking

Very light bodied Pinot Noir from Oregon. Mouth feel very close to water. Noted some slight hints of red berry and vanilla but the taste where fleeting and there was little to no finish. Definitely better Pinot Noirs in this price range out there.

Was like water in the mouth. Any flavors that were there (mostly cherry and red berry) didn't hang around very long. As in almost non-existent. Needless to say there was not a finish. Very disappointed in this wine and think there are several wines that our cheaper that blow this one out of the water. I will not buy this one again.

Very very light pinot, fails to live up to what I would expect from a Willamette Valley wine. Flavors of dark forest fruits exist, but only at a very subtle level.

VERY thin, almost like weak cranberry juice. Nice strawberry fruit with a touch of leather, but the body just wasn't there.

Nice but nothing outstanding. A little light for an Oregon pinot.

Black cherry aromas, underscored by sweet mandarin orange, greet the nose as warm, clove-laced vanilla wafts gently among subtle hints of anise and caramel. The wine opens on the palate with more hints of sweet black cherry, which flows seamlessly into a supple silkiness.

So versatile with food - fish, fowl, beef, and pasta...the perfect house red! Please note that this wine is sealed with a twist cap closure. Try this with Thai or Chinese pepper sauce, grilled scallops, thin crust pizza margherita, pasta with red sauce, and zesty BBQ.
